Desloge board swears in three aldermen

Three incumbent aldermen running unopposed in the April 3 municipal election were sworn in for another two-year term when the Desloge Board of Aldermen met in regular session Monday night at city hall.

After election results were certified, City Clerk Linda Moore administered the oath of office to Ward I Alderman Deion Christopher, Ward II Alderman J.D. Hodge and Alderman Ward III Alvin Sutton, who received 32, 43 and 49 votes respectively.

Alderman Alvin Sutton was selected by the board to serve as mayor pro-tem; Mayor David Kater announced his intention to participate in the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission and Deion Christopher was elected the alderman representative. Additionally, Sutton was elected to serve on the library board.

The board approved a resolution calling for the provision of Air Evac emergency helicopter services by the city for the mayor and aldermen beginning after their election to office. During discussion of the matter, Alderman Christopher told the board he didn’t think the city should provide the coverage to the city board. City Administrator Dan Bryan and Mayor Kater thought it was well deserved since full-time city employees are provided the coverage at no cost.

“You make $100 a month in this job — which isn’t much,” Kater said. “We just thought this would be an extra — a perk — for all you do for the city.”

A roll call vote was taken with all of the aldermen, excluding Christopher, approving the resolution.

The board unanimously approved an ordinance to place a measure on the Aug. 7 ballot to impose a 2.5 percent use tax on items purchased from out-of-state sites on the internet.

“This is the same as the sales tax they would be paying at a brick and mortar store,” Sutton said.

In other action, the board approved a request made by VFW 2426 for a temporary picnic license to serve alcohol for an upcoming fundraiser; approved amending the city policy on overtime that requires city employees to work 40 hours before receiving time-and-a-half.

The board also approved the hiring of a city parks and recreation director. A search for candidates to fill the position will now begin.
