From the Ranger’s Lookout…

When visiting Silver Mines Recreation Area in Madison County, enter from Highway D to Forest Road 2510 (on the east side of the St. Francis River), drive past the Summit and Prospect and Group camping loops to the very end of the road. Turkey Creek Picnic Area is a day-use site with access to the St. Francis River. Picnic tables are scattered throughout the riverfront site and a restroom is available. It is open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Day hikers can head south about one mile along the river to the Riverside Camping Loop, or north about one mile to the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Mill Stream Gardens. Wear sturdy shoes when hiking because sections of the Turkey Creek Trail are still rough due to the 2017 flood. The Forest Service is planning to re-route a short section of the trail that has been damaged by high water and has plans to replace the foot bridge in the future.

Day-use fees for Turkey Creek Picnic Area are $2 per vehicle and should be placed in the envelopes at the self-service kiosk. The day-use fees are used by the campground concessionaires to purchase fuel for mowers, paint for signs and tables, cleaning supplies for the restrooms, and other items to keep the area maintained for visitors. A season pass is also available for purchase from the Forest Service or the concessionaires.

Jim and Doris Rehkop are the 2018 campground concessionaires for Silver Mines Recreation Area. They can be found at the host site in the Riverside Camping Loop.
