K-12 Student Art Show returns Saturday

Art students from kindergarten through high school will once again take over Mineral Area College’s Bob Sechrest Field House with the Mineral Area Council on the Arts’ K-12 Art Show.

The show takes place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. An awards ceremony for ribbons and cash prizes begins at 1 p.m. A duo of art educators will serve as jurors to determine prize winners at this year’s event. The event is free and open to the public.

The art show is a cooperative effort between the arts council and area art instructors who inspire Parkland students. Last year’s event had 1,780 art entries representing 18 districts, private and home schools.

Instructors select the artwork from their students according to grade and media and are then responsible for bringing the pieces to Mineral Area College to help set up the display. Each teacher is limited to how many pieces may be entered, so it is quite the honor for a student to have work on display.

“The K-12 Art Show is always an exciting conclusion to our season,” said Danielle Basler, MACOA executive director. “A great amount passion, skill and creativity will be on display and we take pleasure in seeing the students’ satisfaction and pride as they present their artwork to family, friends and the community.”

Artwork is divided into five age divisions and 11 media categories. Oils, watercolor, print-making, clay, pencil, charcoal and photography are just a few of the media used. Past displays have included everything from a man made out of duct tape to an oil-painted self-portrait.

Financial assistance for the event is provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. For more information on this and other arts council programming and volunteer opportunities, contact Danielle Basler at 573-518-2125.

The Mineral Area Council on the Arts K-12 Student Art Show takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 5 in Mineral Area College’s Bob Sechrest Fieldhouse on the Park Hills campus. The annual event is free and open to the public.
