Church resumes weekly meals

Cornerstone Café has resumed serving weekly meals at no charge in Bonne Terre every Wednesday.

The Café is a ministry of Centenary United Methodist Church which began serving the weekly meals in 2009. The church scaled them back to twice monthly two years ago but recently made the decision to resume the weekly service of dinners to the community.

“We have always been committed to Café, but it became more than our band of volunteers could do every week,” said Pastor Dave Wiant, church pastor. “The church made the decision recently to hire a new staff member who will plan the menus, buy the food and then supervise the meal preparation. That person will also oversee safe food handling practices in our kitchen each week.”

Kathy Holdman is the new director of Kitchen Ministries. Volunteers will assist her each week to prepare the meal in the Cornerstone kitchen. It is served from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays at Cornerstone, the church’s ministry center located next door to the church at 20 Park Street in Bonne Terre.

When news of the return to weekly meals was announced to the crowd that attended a recent Café, a cheer erupted throughout the room.

“It was so good to see how much this time of food and fellowship means to the people we serve,” said Barb Hite, a church member, and a regular volunteer. “We welcome other churches to join us in volunteering, donating store-bought desserts or in any way they can.”

No one who dines at Cornerstone Café is ever asked to pay for their meal.

“This is designed as our gift to the community,” said Wiant. “We welcome everybody to join us.”

On April 18, the Cornerstone Café served 128 people.
