Trojans flex extra-base power against AV

POTOSI – The sizable Potosi baseball senior class had an enjoyable send-off, and got the offense clicking in a final tune-up for district play on Wednesday.

Brendan Hovis homered, Bailey Crump and Noah Jacobsen drilled RBI triples, and the Trojans generated seven extra-base hits while defeating Arcadia Valley 13-6.

Ryan Coleman finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, and Colin Govero singled three times as Potosi (14-10) tallied runs in five of six innings at the plate.

Isaiah Gibbs crushed a home run and Luke Savage notched two singles for Arcadia Valley (11-9), which also played its regular season finale.

Both teams utilized four pitchers for minimal workloads after sending their respective senior aces to the mound on Monday. Both starters – Hovis and opposing hurler Tatum Jones – threw two innings.

Jacobsen allowed two runs on three hits in the fourth, but picked up the win after Potosi sent up eight batters and tallied four times to break a 4-4 tie in the home half.

Crump drew his third consecutive walk in the leadoff spot, and scored the go-ahead run as Jacobsen tripled to deep left-center off AV reliever Taylon Jones.

Govero and Coleman sandwiched RBI hits around a delayed double steal when Garrett Wilkinson took second base and Jacobsen sprinted across the plate to create an 8-4 spread.

Gibbs slashed the Tigers’ deficit in half with a two-run shot to left in the fifth against Devon Brawley, who then retired five of his next six batters.

Potosi answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Collin Hahn singled sharply ahead of Crump’s RBI triple, and Rudy Zuellig picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Wilkinson, who will likely pitch against North County in the Class 4, District 2 opener Saturday, increased the margin to 11-6 with a double to finish 2-for-3 with two RBI overall.

Hovis capped the 16-hit Potosi attack with a two-run home run in the sixth against Stephen Pursley, who worked around two subsequent errors to prevent further damage.

Crump reached base five straight times, and stole second base before scoring the first run of the game on a single to right by Wilkinson. A strong relay by the Tigers cut down trailing runner Zuellig at home.

Savage gave Arcadia Valley a 2-1 advantage in the second inning on an RBI single after hits by Tatum Jones and Carter Brogan plus a walk to Eli Vandergriff loaded the bases with no outs.

Potosi developed another quick lead change with three runs after batting around in the home half. Hovis began his 3-for-4 effort with a bunt single ahead of Hahn’s tying sacrifice fly.

Zuellig put the Trojans ahead with a fielder’s choice, and Jacobsen singled as a pinch-hitter to make it 4-2 before a sharp liner was snared by Savage at second base.

The Tigers opened the fourth with singles by Vandergriff and Corbin Rea. Savage slapped an RBI single, and placed himself in an intentional rundown that enabled Rea to cross the plate.

Andrew Tedford and Elliot Womble singled off the bench for Arcadia Valley, which will begin its Class 3, District 3 quest against Woodland on Saturday at Jefferson High School.

Jacobsen pitched the lone perfect frame of the contest, striking out a pair in the third.

AV third baseman Trent Russell caught a line drive and immediately zipped a throw across the diamond to complete a double play in the third.

Hovis doubled two pitches later, and lacked only a triple for the cycle.

Sikeston 10, North County 4

SIKESTON, Mo. – Nate Self and Bryce Bays homered while collecting two hits each, and Sikeston beat North County 10-4 on Wednesday to close the baseball regular season.

The Bulldogs posted five runs over the first two innings against Raiders starter Cody Hubbard, and built a 9-2 lead heading into the fifth.

Briley Smith finished 2-for-3 with a double, and Hubbard reached base three times on a single and two walks for North County (16-10).

Sean Pruneau doubled while Eli Claywell had a single with two runs scored. Karson Kekec and Drew Forney had the Raiders’ other hits.

Kolten Poorman was among four pitchers used by North County, and retired his only two batters faced. The Raiders will face in Class 4, District 2 action on Saturday.
