Preparations begin for Optimist Clubs 4th of July Celebration

The Fredericktown Area Optimist Club has partnered with the Madison County Chamber of Commerce for this year’s Madison County Bicentennial 4th of July Celebration.

“The Optimist Club always does a great job putting on the event and the fireworks last year were amazing,” Madison County Chamber of Commerce President Tessa Rehkop said. “The Chamber wanted to get involved this year to make it even bigger for the bicentennial. We plan to incorporate more activities and games for the kids by having local businesses setup booths.”

“With encouragement from the City of Fredericktown, the two groups are pursuing this project in 2018 to be held at the Rotary Park Wednesday, July 4 with a funding goal of $5,000,” Optimist Club Member Juli Kline said. “Monetary donations will be matched with hours of volunteerism, bringing together our community to advance the well-being of youth and of Madison County as a whole.”

The Optimist Club will hold its annual Parade on Wheels event where kids ages 3 to 10 decorate anything on wheels including wagons, bicycles, tricycles etc. Awards will be presented to the best decorations with special prizes for those who decorate in a bicentennial or Independence Day theme.

The entry fee to participate is canned goods which will be donated to the food pantry.

Both the Optimist Club and Chamber of Commerce are inviting individuals and organizations to set up booths around the Rotary Park walking track to sell non-food items and host free activities for the kids.

“Activities may include sand volleyball, basketball toss, baseball derby, horseshoe toss, tennis match, bounce house, sidewalk chalk contest, ring toss, musical chairs, freeze dance, outdoor twister, watermelon seed spitting, sponge toss, yard pick-up sticks, life size bubbles or any other activity of your choice,” Kline said. “You may want to lead crafts like Popsicle stick American flags, can bowling, fireworks painting, Popsicle stick streamers, lady liberty crowns, sparkler hats, pinwheels or one of your own design.”

Fundraising efforts have already began with donations from New Era Bank, Ozarks Federal Savings and Loan and Parkland HealthMart Pharmacy.

Kline said 100 percent of money raised will go toward the fireworks display and the costs are increased due to special event insurance needed to put on this type of event.
