Recognized for efforts in helping students

Mineral Area College’s reading instructor Ellen Miller and child development instructor Jennifer Sikes had a vision to provide MAC students with a little helping hand to fuel their brain power. They, as well as other instructors, recognized some MAC students experienced food insecurity (hunger) issues, a nationwide concern on college campuses. They took action and worked to research, design and implement MAC’s Food Pantry, which opened in Fall 2017.

At a recent conference of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of women educators, Ellen and Jennifer were recognized with the Delta Kappa Gamma Key Woman Educator Award for their efforts to start the MAC Food Pantry and increase students’ likelihood to stay enrolled and achieve their high education goals.
