MAC College for Kids, Teen Academy registration begins
One might think Mineral Area College becomes quiet during the summer months, but the Park Hills campus is actually teeming with a variety of affordable summer activities to keep kids physically active and engaged in the learning process.
College for Kids and Teen Academy are two such opportunities.
College for Kids (CFK) runs for the two weeks of July 9-13 and July 16-20. CFK offers fun, hands-on learning opportunities for kids entering grades 2 – 8 during the next school year. For returning students, 15 of the 28 different classes are new this year and include courses such as Barn Quilts, Extreme Painting, K-Nex Kids and Trash to Treasure for second and third graders. Barn Quilts and Extreme Painting returns for grades 4 – 8 along with Uke it Up, Cooking and Cultures, Dazzled by Disney, Lab Rats and more.
Teen Academy runs the week of July 23-27 for students entering grades 6 through 9 and offers advanced, hands-on learning opportunities. Courses include Cooking 101, CSI, Simply Sports, Unsinkable Titanic and Writer’s Workshop.
CFK Coordinator Melissa Kline said the instructors are chosen with care.
“Our cooking instructor, Valeria Craig, is a certified Healthy Cooking instructor, while our writing instructor is published author Morgan Comnick,” she said.
Kids may attend CFK during the morning session from 8-11:50, the afternoon session from 12:30-4:20, or all day.
“If students stay all day, they should bring their lunch and we’ll have a picnic,” Kline said.
The cost for CFK is $65 for a half day or $130 for all day. Students attending Teen Academy may select as many or as few courses as they wish at $35 per course. There is a limited number of $110 scholarships available on a first-come, first-served basis for kids who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. If students register before June 8, the $10 registration fee will be waived.
Applications for CFK and Teen Academy can be found at the Park Hills, Bonne Terre, Desloge and Farmington libraries, or in MAC’s Continuing Education office next to the Highway Patrol trooper station at the front of the MAC campus, or online at www.MineralArea.edu/CE/MACkids.
