Festus clips Post 150, lands top district seed

FESTUS, Mo. – Ste. Genevieve Post 150 scored the go-ahead run when a pickoff throw by relief pitcher Brennan Pryor bounced into foul territory during the sixth inning.

Pryor found himself at the plate in a crucial situation minutes later, and delivered a two-run single that helped Festus Post 253 clinch the No. 1 seed for next week’s Senior Legion District 13 tournament.

Two called strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh by Pryor sealed the outcome as Festus prevailed 5-4 as the visiting team on its home field in a rescheduled game.

Ste. Genevieve mounted a sudden two-out rally while trailing 3-2. Carter Roth ripped a double to left-center field, and headed home on a tying RBI single by Drew Toombs.

Brian Selby drew an eight-pitch walk that ended the outing of Post 253 starter Michael Brewer, and Toombs scampered to the plate on Pryor’s error before a trailing runner was tagged out.

Kellen Blum looked to close out his second relief win in as many nights, but Gavin Turley singled and advanced to third on a double by Collin Mann, who was 2-for-2 and reached base four times.

Blum obtained a needed strikeout after an intentional walk loaded the bases, but Pryor lifted a decisive drive into shallow right-center to represent the third and final lead change.

Turley, Pryor and Brewer matched Mann with two hits for Post 253, which finished 8-0 against district opponents in the regular season.

Tyler Blum notched two singles and Sam Stolzer scored twice as a courtesy runner for Ste. Genevieve, which was outhit 9-4 overall.

Selby hustled from behind the plate to make a difficult catch in the fourth inning, and third baseman Jacob Bieser caught a line drive to turn a double play in the sixth.

Derek Morganthaler allowed six hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings as the Post 150 starter. He was greeted by three consecutive hits to begin the game.

Brewer drilled a two-run double before Ste. Genevieve picked up an unearned tally in the home half of the first, then restored a 3-1 Festus advantage with a solo home run in the third inning.

Post 150 drew closer in its half of the third after Morganthaler walked and Stolzer slid safely on a wild pitch from Brewer, who yielded two hits and four walks while fanning seven in a no-decision.

Morganthaler picked off two runners early on, and Selby caught another stealing in defeat.

Ste. Genevieve will host the district tourney as the likely No. 2 seed starting Monday at Yanks’ Field.

Festus 5, Bonne Terre 0

BONNE TERRE – Christian Hancock dominated with six strikeouts in a complete game two-hitter, and Festus Post 253 rolled 5-0 past Jackson-Thomure Post 83 late Thursday.

Jake Leitner provided half of his team’s eight hits by going 4-for-4 in the clean-up spot, while Gavin Turley and Caleb Hyde reached base twice with a single included.

No. 9 batter Jacob Bridges smoked an RBI double to left field following a two-out walk in the second inning, then came home on a wild pitch and errant throw for a 2-0 Festus lead.

Bonne Terre starter Brian Chandler worked around two runners in the opening frame, but encountered further trouble in the third.

Brennan Pryor grounded an RBI single through the left side, and Charlie Pratt drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0.

Chandler was charged with three earned runs over five innings, and struck out seven while yielding five walks and two hit batsmen.

Hancock issued four walks through his seven innings, but two were erased by a pick-off throw and well-timed pitchout on an attempted steal.

Karson Kekec singled to center for Post 83 in the second inning, and Matt Momot hustled out an infield hit while leading off the bottom of the third.

Sean Pruneau was called out on a third strike to strand Momot at second base, and was ejected while walking toward the dugout.

Turley singled and scored on a wild pitch by reliever Shelby Lee in the Festus sixth.
