Knights serve up win over Windsor

FARMINGTON – Various minor injuries and ailments have forced Farmington girls tennis coach Andrew Canter to adjust his lineup several times already this season.

He called upon Emmaline Waddell to fill the No. 6 ranking on Thursday, and she responded with two wins as the Knights proceeded to roll past Windsor 8-1 in non-conference action.

Waddell executed a nice lob shot to secure a game point while defeating Allison Hulsey 8-2. She also joined Baylee Gilliam for a convincing 8-1 doubles triumph.

Farmington (9-1) quickly completed a doubles sweep, and can clinch another MAAA regular season championship by winning either of its encounters next week against Potosi and Arcadia Valley.

Windsor used its fourth and fifth singles players, Alyssa Weisner and Nicole Rice, to form its No. 1 tandem in the closest doubles contest of the day.

However, Abby Jent and Mary Kate Burcham used a pair of service breaks to capture four of the last five games and secure an 8-5 result.

Weisner landed a drop volley at the net to make it 5-4, but the Farmington pair slammed the door with Jent firing a strong putaway down the middle at the net on match point.

Virginia Lugo and Bekah Kimpel dominated for an 8-0 doubles win, but each was forced to work hard during their subsequent individual efforts.

Lugo overcame consecutive unforced errors and a break point advantage for Lamkins while serving 5-6, then notched a successful break with excellent side-to-side coverage during a key rally to prevail 8-6.

Jent took the first seven games against No. 1 singles foe Bailey Anderson for an 8-1 win. Burcham seized immediate command and served effectively throughout an 8-0 shutout.
