Fire causes damage to Madison County Farm Supply

Madison County Farm Supply suffered major damage Tuesday as a fire broke out in their grain elevator.

The Fredericktown Fire Department responded to the call at 9:08 a.m. for a fire at 320 N. Mine La Motte in Fredericktown. The call reported smoke coming from the feed storage building across the street from the farm store.

According to Fredericktown Fire Chief John Clark, the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and the state fire marshal’s office is currently investigating.

Clark said the structure was believed to be constructed in 1952 from oak lumber which was then topped with two layers of sheet iron making it difficult to gain access to the burning grain.

“The grain elevators will be a total loss,” Clark said. “The whole upper part of the structure was old wood from 1952 on the inside and we couldn’t get to it so everything was in there smoldering causing large amounts of smoke.”

Clark said one firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion on the scene but will be OK and no other injuries were reported.

Part of Main St. and N. Mine La Motte Ave. remained closed for several hours as the crews battled the fire.

Clark said the fire was extinguished about 2:30 p.m.

Crews from Marquand, Cherokee Pass and Farmington Fire Departments came to assist Fredericktown Fire Department. Fredericktown Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Department and Madison County EMS were also on scene.
