Roundup: Farmington pushes tennis title streak to four

POTOSI – Farmington maintained its dominant grip on the MAAA girls tennis conference by clinching its fourth consecutive regular season title Tuesday with one duel remaining.

Abby Jent teamed with Mary Kate Burcham, and Baylee Gilliam combined with Susan Rippee to help the Knights secure a doubles sweep while prevailing 8-1 overall against Potosi.

Burcham and Gilliam each prevailed 8-1 while Jent and Rippee posted 8-2 outcomes in singles action for Farmington (10-2, 7-0). Bekah Kimpel added an 8-3 win over Taylor Campbell.

Michelle Whitaker topped Virginia Lugo 8-4 at No. 3 singles, and joined Sarah Hornsey in the strongest doubles challenge by Potosi (7-5, 4-3) in an eventual 8-6 setback against Lugo and Kimpel.

The MAAA tournament is scheduled for Thursday at Engler Park.

IRONTON – Taylor Starkey bolstered her status as the top MAAA singles player with a resounding 8-2 result to lead Fredericktown past Arcadia Valley 8-1 in girls tennis action.

Victoria Peppers posted an 8-0 shutout and Skyler Hennen won 8-1 while Sophie Rehkop and Liz Hinkle provided 8-3 decisions for the Lady Blackcats.

Fredericktown (8-6, 5-3) dropped only games during a doubles sweep as Starkey and Peppers set the tone by defeating Sidney Tyndall and Ashley Theros 8-1.

Faith Sasser notched a decisive No. 4 singles victory for Arcadia Valley (0-11, 0-7).

Kingston 2, Valley 1

CADET – The Kingston volleyball team repaid county rival Valley for an earlier three-set loss by earning a 25-18, 14-25, 25-13 home victory on Tuesday night.

Jade Coleman totaled three kills and nine digs, while setter Keely Reyes dispensed 12 assists for the Lady Cougars (3-9, 1-0).

Felisha Stewart powered the Lady Vikings (2-9, 0-1) in defeat with six kills and five blocks. Mariah Buxton also collected six kills while serving two aces.

Jalynn Orrick served 10 points with two aces, and made a team-high 11 assists for Valley. Liz Morris had three blocks along with two aces among eight points.

Molly Comfort compiled three kills, seven assists and five digs.

Potosi 2, Fredericktown 0

FREDERICKTOWN – Potosi amassed nine service aces overall – getting two each from Olivia Marsa, Olivia Coleman and Carley Hampton – and rolled past Fredericktown 25-18, 25-22.

Coleman finished with five kills, 10 serve receptions and four digs, while Hampton provided four kills, 12 receptions and a team-high eight digs for the Lady Trojans (8-7, 1-0).

Jessi Nicholson totaled 10 assists, and equaled Gracey Allison with three kills each. Cameryn Yount made nine assists in the road victory.

Fredericktown (3-12, 0-1) dropped its third straight home match in straight sets.

Arcadia Valley 2, West County 0

IRONTON – Laney Tucker served seven points and tied teammate Kirsten Day with six kills apiece as Arcadia Valley opened the MAAA Small-School schedule by defeating West County 25-17, 25-18.

Maddie DeMent paced the Lady Tigers (15-3-1) up front with nine kills and two stuff-blocks. Gracee Smith provided seven digs while Katie Whited and Josie Landrum added four each.

Senior setter Macey Browers finished with 17 assists along with seven digs, six points and three kills.

Dori McRaven highlighted the West County attack by notching nine kills without an error, and added four digs. Ivy Meinershagen picked up eight digs and five points.

Makenzie Simily served 11 points and knocked down four kills for the Lady Bulldogs (9-5-1). She had four digs to match Kaitlin Spivey, who equaled Haylee Watson with six points each.

Kylie Newhouse tallied 10 assists and five digs.

Valle Catholic 2, Bismarck 0

BISMARCK – Ella Bertram recorded six kills and four shared blocks while joining the varsity rotation, and Valle Catholic eased to a 25-9, 25-17 victory at Bismarck.

Brooke Viox served four aces, and Taylor Zerwig posted 10 points while matching Grace Eftink with two aces for the Lady Warriors (9-6, 1-0).

Lainey Bauman compiled six kills, five digs and nine points to propel Valle Catholic. Erin Mueller and Riley Siebert chipped in three kills each, and Rachel Loida made 16 assists.

Farmington 5, Borgia 2

FARMINGTON – Cole Gerstenberger recorded a hat trick and added an assist as the Farmington soccer team defeated Borgia 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Tristan Stotler and Bryce Sancegraw also scored as the Knights (8-2) earned their fifth consecutive win.

Gatlin Roberts collected three assists, and Kody Winch had another.
