Knights second at home XC meet

FARMINGTON – Potosi junior Kayley Heeter finished as girls varsity runner-up on Saturday among 63 competitors in the Farmington Cross Country Invitational meet at Engler Park.

Her time of 20:21 was just 12 seconds behind the winning pace established by freshman Esperanza Zalite (20:09), who led Notre Dame to a three-point team triumph over the host school.

Saxony Lutheran star Caleb Cornelius (16:12) dominated the boys race by a 39-second gap, while Benton Keran (16:51) of Notre Dame took second and Potosi senior Darren Reese (17:04) was third among 83.

The Farmington girls had four freshmen in their varsity lineup, and all seven participants finished within the top 18, including five who formed a pack until the conclusion.

Ella Moriarty clocked 21:05 to guide the Knights one week after fellow freshman Breanna Mathes won the MAAA individual championship at Potosi.

Reese followed up his MAAA title with another strong showing, and was joined in the top 10 by Potosi sophomore Hunter Griffin (17:39) in seventh. Will Jarvis (18:10) checked in 20th.

Eight schools were represented in the boys’ top 10, including Brayden Mullins (17:39) of Fredericktown with a personal record in sixth, Cameron Stevens (17:40) of West County in eighth, and Gabe Ayers (17:43) of St. Paul in 10th.

Thomas Lee (17:46) provided the highest result for host Farmington in 11th, and Jordan Borseth (17:58) took 16th for North County.
