P.A. office issues annual report

The St. Francois County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has released its annual report on filed cases, referrals from law enforcement, criminal cases closed by the office and amount of restitution paid to crime victims between the dates of Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 30, 2018.

Spring Gray of the prosecuting attorney’s office made a brief presentation regarding the annual report during the Oct. 30 meeting of the St. Francois County Commission.

“I don’t know how to transfer this information to the public,” said Presiding Commissioner Harold Gallaher. “I don’t know how to do that best.”

Gray responded, “So, basically it goes by felony cases filed, so the total number of felony cases we filed from Nov. 1, 2017 to Oct. 30, 2018 were 904 cases total. The misdemeanors, including some infractions, were 795 cases.

“So, the total number of cases was 1,699. They go by the year that it needs to be filed, so it has to be filed before or on Nov. 1. So, it does come on Nov. 1 of the prior year until the end of October of this year.”

According to the report, the number of cases filed in 2018 compares to 813 felony cases and 780 misdemeanor and infraction cases filed between Nov. 1, 1916 to Oct. 31, 2017.

Gallaher replied, “Well, looking at the numbers, the crude number of total cases went up about 9 percent from 2017 to 2018.”

Gray said, “The dollar amount for restitution collected, so far, basically shows from Nov. 1, 2017 through today. It doesn’t include to the end of the year. So, from October — through tomorrow — and November and December we will still be collecting restitution for the rest of the year.”

Gallaher replied, “So, that amount will change — the restitution of crime victims.”

“Yes,” Gray said. “That would be victims of our crimes, like all of our felonies and some other cases.”

The report states that $137,088.95 restitution was paid to crime victims from Nov. 1, 2017 through Oct. 30, 2018. This compares to $184,407.42 in restitution paid to crime victims over the same period a year ago.

Other items mentioned in the report included referrals from law enforcement that states, between Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 30, 2018, the office received 2,334 referrals, excluding child support, from law enforcement agencies requesting charges.

From those 2,334 referrals, the report states that 2,627 felony and misdemeanor charges were issued by the prosecuting attorney’s office. This compares to 2,331 total referrals and 3,439 charges issued from Nov. 1, 2016 through Oct. 30, 2017.

Criminal cases closed by the office between Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 30, 2018 totaled 2,005. In the previous year, 1,981 criminal cases were closed.
