Balanced 19-3 run helps Mineral Area top Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – Yahuza Rasas scored five field goals from close range within a seven-minute span as the Mineral Area men’s basketball team often located him early in the second half.

The Cardinals later generated a 19-3 run with a balance of perimeter shooting and slashing layups, and rolled past the Quincy junior varsity 95-72 on Monday night.

Rasas finished with a game-high 22 points, and Steve Wooten scored 16 to lead four players in double figures for Mineral Area (4-0).

Patrick Strzala knocked down two early 3-pointers, and Onteral Woodson pushed the margin to 18-6 following a Rasas putback as the Cardinals never trailed.

Quincy stayed within 27-19 after getting a transition layup with about eight minutes remaining before intermission, and drained six triples during the first half.

Wooten and Anthony Wales dropped in mid-range shots, and Rasas scored a second-chance basket off a steal by Darreus Brown, however, as an 11-0 spurt created a 40-21 MAC advantage.

David Kachelries piled up several assists after totaling 10 in his previous game, and closed the half with a jumper to make it 47-33. He ended with 10 points.

Woodson made a steal and layup out of the break while notching 14 points for the Cardinals, and Rasas added two more field goals while drawing contact.

Chandler Garvey paced Quincy with 18 points, and brought the Hawks within 62-49 on a driving layup before Mineral Area soon pulled away.

Wooten, Kachelries and Brown connected from 3-point range, and Rasas resumed his productive effort with a reverse layup that secured the largest separation of the night at 86-55.

Tarek Raafat chipped in a pair of threes, and center Gabe O’Neal had two early baskets as part of the starting five for Mineral Area, which will host Kennedy-King on Friday.
