Fredericktown High School salutes local veterans

Fredericktown High School recognized Madison County veterans for their service, Friday.

The JROTC Blackcat Battalion hosted the annual Veterans Breakfast, followed by the Student Council Veterans Day Assembly in the gymnasium.

The breakfast began as JROTC Cdt LTC Blake Olson welcomed the 152 veterans and spouses. After the Pledge of Allegiance by Cdt Aaron Cooper and the blessing by Cdt CPL Cameron Hart, came the meal. The five branches of service were toasted, LTC John Francis gave a dedication to MSG Todd Robert Smith who died September 15, 2018, at the age of 43. There was a closing prayer and remarks.

The veterans walked to the gym through hallways adorned with posters and decorations created by R-I students from the elementary, intermediate, and middle schools.

During the assembly, Student Body President Abby Parson welcomed everyone. The JROTC Color Guard presented the colors. The National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance followed. The FHS Choir performed the five service songs and “Thank You, Soldiers.”

A solemn M.I.A./P.O.W. tribute was followed by “Taps.” Then, the FHS Band played “Salvation is Created” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

There were readings and remarks and a thank you to veterans from student council members.

Student Council and JROTC members distributed gifts to the veterans in attendance and the assembly came to a close.
