Madison Raymond “”Mat”” Stevens

Madison Raymond Stevens (nicknamed “Mat”), 93, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2018. He was born September 11, 1925 at his home on the Dry Creek community of Madison County.

Mat was married to Dorothy Jean Young in 1950. They had been married for over 50 years before she passed in 2004. Madison was also preceded in death by his parents, Riley and Georgia Stevens; one brother, Van; and two sisters, Aimee Richey and Violet Scheapf. 

Madison and Dorothy had three sons, Donald, David, and DeWayne. Don and his wife, Susan, currently live in Austin, Texas. David and his wife, Barbara, reside in Farmington. DeWayne teaches in Kuwait. Don’s family includes three sons, Greg, Ryan, and Doug and one daughter, Kristen. David and Barbara have two sons, Chris and Matt, who live in St. Louis.

Mat’s favorite memories were his days in the Navy. He was often asked to speak to school groups in Fredericktown recalling his service aboard the USS Dennis during WWII. His employment included work with the National Lead Company in Fredericktown and doing geophysical surveying for several national oil companies. His hobbies included stamp and coin collecting as well as piloting his own aircraft hangered at Fredericktown’s airport.

He was a longtime member of Fredericktown VFW Post 4320, receiving his 60-year membership pin. He was also a charter member and deacon of the Second Baptist Church of Fredericktown where he, Dorothy, and their three sons attended regularly.

Chapel services were Friday, November 9, at the Follis & Sons Funeral Home in Fredericktown. The Stevens family would like to thank the staff of Stockhoff, Safe Harbor Hospice, and Follis and Sons Funeral Home for their assistance during this time.
