Bomb squad called for pipe bomb
The bomb squad responded to the St. Francois County Jail after a resident found a small pipe bomb and took it to the sheriff’s department Saturday morning.
Doubet Road, which runs along the front of the jail and sheriff’s department offices, was blocked off for a time.
St. Francois County Sheriff Dan Bullock said Saturday morning that he didn’t think it was anything drastic but the bomb squad was on the way.
“The guy that found it has already opened it,” Bullock said. “He just put it in the car and brought it here.”
Bullock said while it is not an uncommon thing for the public to bring suspicious items like this to the sheriff’s office, he would prefer they didn’t.
“Something we would like to tell the public is if you find something that you think is a bomb, leave it there and call us so we can make sure everyone is safe,” Bullock said. “We’ve had it happen several times. Just leave it where it is and call us.”
Bullock said he would like to thank the Farmington Fire Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol for helping secure the scene on such a busy day for the sheriff’s office.

A small pipe bomb lays on the sidewalk outside the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities secured the area as they waited for bomb squad to arrive from Jefferson City to deactivate the potential explosive.
