Multi-family reunion raising funds for Gibson Cemetery

The Gibson, Mitchell, Cole, Vandiver and Turley Family Reunion is being held at noon Saturday at Bonne Terre City Park, with 70 people coming from as far away as the states of California and Hawaii attending.

A multi-family reunion being held this Saturday at Bonne Terre City Park is raising funds for the restoration of Gibson Cemetery in Park Hills.

According to Linda Kuhn, reunion coordinator, there will be food, fun and raffles, with all proceeds going to help restore Gibson Cemetery in Park Hills. On Sunday, Pastor Dan Gibson, a descendant of the Gibson family, will give a blessing at 11 a.m. at the cemetery.

“This private and indigent cemetery is over 100 years old,” said Kuhn. “After William Riley Gibson died in 1900, the property was sold several times. Due to the elements, neglect and acts of vandalism, restoration of the cemetery will take a while to bring it back to a place where loved ones can rest.

“Headed by Greg McWilliams and volunteers, over 510 graves have been found as of today. Most of the headstones are gone. We will honor Greg McWilliams at the reunion. He not only tries to find graves by probing the area but also puts broken headstones back together and finds treasures left by the families. Please find the time to come by on these two important days. Have lunch with us and receive a thank-you gift.”
