Dragons top Cats in home opener

The Fredericktown High School football team lost 49-7 to Ste. Genevieve, Friday, here.
It was the Blackcats home opener after three straight road contests to open the 2023 season.
Ste. Genevieve got on the board on its first drive, following a Cats’ punt. The Dragons went 59 yards on 11 plays, as quarterback Luke Ferranto connected with Wyatt Springkamper on a 34-yard pass on fourth down. Fredericktown blocked the PAT to make it 6-0 with 6:32 to play in the first quarter.
Ste. Genevieve ended another long drive with a touchdown with 33.7 seconds left in the first quarter. The Dragons made it 21-0 early in the second quarter. They led 27-0 at halftime.
Ste. Genevieve returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown to take a 35-0 lead with 11:45 to play in the third quarter.
The Cats responded with a ten-play, 59-yard scoring drive. Fredericktown quarterback Easton Wood ran the ball in from the 8-yard line. DJ Baca’s PAT made it 35-7.
The Dragons scored once more in the third quarter and again, late midway through the fourth.
Wood rushed for 27 yards and completed 6 passes for 57 yards. LeeAndrea catchings caught three passes for 49 yards. Dane Sensel and Mason Proffer each had 12 tackles to lead the Cats’ defense.
Fredericktown is back at home, Friday night. The Cats host the Potosi Trojans.
