Pirates top Cats on senior night

The Fredericktown High School girls basketball team celebrated its seniors, Monday night.
Between the junior varsity and varsity games against Perryville, Fredericktown’s senior team members and their parents were recognized on the court. Those seniors are Keira Francis, Gabbie McFadden, Nikolija Mihajlovic, and Ava Penuel.
Fredericktown led throughout most of the varsity game before the Pirates tied it in the fourth quarter and won 49-41 in overtime.
Fredericktown led 11-10 after one quarter. In the second quarter, the Cats held the Pirates to just four points and took a 24-14 lead into the break. The Cats pulled ahead 32-16 early in the third quarter before Perryville got a timeout and began its comeback. The Pirates scored seven straight points to end the quarter and trailed 32-23 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a reverse of the second with Perryville outscoring Fredericktown, 13-4 and sending the game into overtime tied at 36-36. The Pirates’ Brooklyn Moll scored ten of her game-high 27 in the overtime and helped Perryville to the victory.
For Fredericktown, Penuel scored 17. Amelia Miller scored ten, Calie Allgier scored five, and Keira Francis, Maggie Wood, and Laila Stephens each scored three points.
Last week, the Cats wrapped up play in the MAAA Tournament, at Mineral Area College. Friday, the Cats lost 33-30 to Bismarck in the fifth place semifinals. The Cats trailed 12-8 after one quarter and 18-17 at halftime. Bismarck took a 26-23 lead into the final period. FHS fell behind by as many as eight points late in the fourth quarter. McFadden made a basket with 61 seconds left, and a 3-pointer by Penuel trimmed the deficit to three points with 9.1 left. The Cats got a steal, but a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer was short, and the Indians held on for the victory.
Francis and Miller led the Cats with eight points, each. Penuel scored seven, Wood scored four, McFadden scored two, and Allgier had one.
The girls host Dexter, Feb. 22.

FHS boys lose to St. Vincent
The Fredericktown High School boys basketball team lost 59-39, Monday, at St. Vincent.
The Blackcats lost 47-28 to Ste. Genevieve, in the fifth place semifinals of the MAAA Tournament, Feb. 8, at MAC. The Cats trailed 9-4 after one quarter and 20-10 at halftime. The Dragons took a 31-21 lead into the final quarter.
Leeandrea Catchings and Tim DeSanto each scored six for the Cats. Blake Terry-Brakfeild scored four points, Caleb Feltz and Brayson Reagan each scored three, and Braydon McMinn, Zander Stephens, and Miguel Millan each scored two points.
The Blackcats will host Arcadia Valley for their senior night, tonight (Feb. 14).
