A Trivia Night taking place Saturday night at the Leadington VFW Hall will be raising money to help provide uniforms, travel and training for Region 8 Missouri EMS Honor Guard members.
The competition will begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. The cost is $100 per table, with a max of eight players per table. The evening will also feature cash prizes, a 50/50 drawing, a basket raffle and door prizes. Participants are asked to bring their own snacks. However, no outside beverages or coolers will be allowed.
According to Brad Hahn, commander of the Region 8 Missouri EMS Honor Guard (also known as the Funeral Response Team), the funds go to a worthy cause.
“We use the money to help cover the cost of our Class A uniforms, travel and training,” he said. “We have an annual conference every year at Lake of the Ozarks. We’re trying to go to the National EMS Memorial Conference in Washington DC. We’ve never had the opportunity to do that because of the expenses. So, we’re trying to do that.
“The Missouri EMS Funeral Response Team is a trained and dedicated corps of EMS volunteers who will respond to your department when requested. We are pre-hospital medical providers who volunteer right here in Missouri. Our goal is that every pre-hospital provider who gives the ultimate sacrifice receives final honors and last rights.”
Asked what the mission of the funeral response team was, Hahn said, “Our mission is to provide professional funeral support and services to agencies and survivors of Missouri EMS Providers who have given their lives in the line of duty, have died while still actively serving, or have served as an EMS provider or administrator.
“We provide professional honor guard services and specialize in assistance of serious injury events. These can include funeral procedures post-event or pre-planning and SOG guidance for either Line of Duty Deaths, or Non-LODD. Our goal is to represent all members of the EMS profession with honor, dignity, and respect. Additionally, we strive to provide compassion, support, and assistance to the families, colleagues, and departments of fallen EMS personnel.”
The Region 8 Funeral Response Team serves the counties of Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Crawford, Iron, Madison, Perry, Ste. Genevieve, St. Francois and Washington.
Asked what kind of response the team had to last year’s Trivia Night, Hahn said, “Last year, we had six teams. We had 10 round sponsors. And then we had numerous silent auction and raffle items. This year, as of right now, we’ve doubled the number of teams. We have 10 sponsors, the same number as last year.
“My goal last year was $2,000, and we met that goal. I think we made somewhere around $2,200 to 2,400 last year. So, I increased my goal this year to $3,000 and, fingers crossed, we can do it.”
Hahn stressed that the event is open to the public — everyone is welcome.
