The field dedication ceremony at Mineral Area College’s (MAC) new softball field and the games to be played there were originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, but a soggy forecast necessitated rescheduling efforts. The public is invited to the combination ribbon-cutting/field dedication ceremony at 1:45 p.m. on Monday, April 22.
The field is located next to Hal Loughary Baseball Field on MAC’s Park Hills Campus. Parking is available in Lot C with a limited number of spaces next to the field.
The MAC softball team will battle Culver-Stockton Junior Varsity with games at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
In January at the board of trustees meeting, Executive Director of Development Kevin Thurman provided a MAC Foundation update in which he said the foundation had received a $50,000 grant from United Missouri Bank to support the softball program. Funds were designated for the construction of a fieldhouse building to house locker rooms, offices, and restrooms. He said that Botkin Lumber donated lumber for this project, and they utilized the skills of students and faculty from the Building and Construction Technology program to help in the construction process.
MAC Athletic Director Jim Gerwitz said having the baseball and softball fields on campus is exciting. Previously, softball games had to be played off-campus at Farmington, the Park Hills Sports Complex, or at Fredericktown.
“We’re excited to have a beautiful turf field on campus for our women’s softball team,” said Danielle Basler, MAC’s executive director for college communications. “Come out and see the new facility and stick around to see the MAC softball team in action.”
MAC President Dr. Joe Gilgour spoke about the women’s softball field project over the last year and emphasized that the new field would be a valuable asset to the program and college.
