High winds that blew through Farmington on Tuesday afternoon caused massive tree limbs to fall down upon the roof of a home near the public library. Dan Schunks
Despite damage, no one in the home was injured
Old homes and scenic shade trees often offer an idyllic setting, but as the owners of one such home found out Tuesday afternoon, such a setting often comes with harsh consequences.
High wind gusts hit Farmington early Tuesday afternoon, bringing massive limbs down onto the home of Emaline Patterson and Gavin Early in the 300 block of Liberty Street. The downed limbs damaged their home, smashing into the roof of the front porch and cracking plaster walls inside.
“I was here on the back porch when it happened, and I heard a big boom, like an explosion,” said Early.
Patterson added, “We have twin babies, seven months old. They were sleeping in an adjacent room. I woke them up, scared. It is scary, really.”
The couple purchased the home, built in 1903, seven months ago.

Describing the damage to the home’s interior, Early said, “Above the window in the living room, there’s a big old crack. And then the porch here, above the window, cracked everything.”
By evening, the bulk of the limbs had been cut up and hauled away. The only lingering visual damage was the compromised front porch roof.
Fortunately, there were no injuries — just young twins awakened from a secure nap by the sound of large tree limbs crashing into their home. And as any experienced parent can tell you, that can be a lingering, traumatic experience in its own right.
