Fredericktown quarterback Easton Wood eludes a Central defender, Thursday, at Blackcat Valley
Forty-eight minutes of rain-soaked football were not enough to determine a winner in one of the more thrilling football games in this area in a number of years.
The Central Rebels and Fredericktown Blackcats battled to a 28-28 tie after four quarters, Friday night at Fredericktown. Both teams scored and made a successful 2-point conversion in their first overtime. In the second overtime, Central scored and stopped the Cats for a 42-34 victory.
Central took an 8-0 lead with 7:06 to play in the first quarter, on a 21-yard pass from Jaxon Jones to Karras Foster.
Fredericktown trimmed the Rebels’ lead to 8-7 on a 71-yard pass from Easton Wood to D.J. Baca. Fredericktown took the lead on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Wood to LeeAndrea Catchings with 17.8 seconds to play until halftime.
Central tied the game at 14-14 with 5:06 to play in the third quarter.
A 48-yard Wood to Baca connection made it 21-14, Cats. After a Central touchdown, Wood capped a Cats’ drive with a six-yard scoring run to make it 28-22 with 11:13 to play in regulation.
Central tied the game with 6:14 to play. Fredericktown attempted a long field goal with 1:08 to play, but it was wide to the left. Central was unable to score and the game went to overtime.
Fredericktown scored in the first overtime on the third touchdown pass from Wood to Baca. The PAT was blocked. Jones scored for Central, and FHS stopped the 2-point conversion forcing a second overtime.
In the second overtime, Jones scored for the Rebels and the 2-point play was good this time. Jones sealed the Rebels’ victory with an interception on the Cats’ possession.
For the Cats, Wood led the rushing attack with 23 carries for 142 yards and a score. Zac Botbyl had nine carries for 25 yards. Wood completed eight passes for 265 yards and four scores. Baca was the leading receiver with five catches for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Derek Irby had one catch for 50 yards. Catchings had one for 28 and a score.
On defense, Ethan Marler had 22 total tackles, including 14 solos. Wood had 21 (13 solos) and an interception. Irby also had an interception.
The Cats host Valle, Friday night.
