At the school board meeting on Nov. 18, four students were recognized for their stellar athletic, or in the case of two choir students, musical semester for all state honors.
Senior Miley Wengler was recognized for being 3rd in the league for homeruns, which she scored 4; 3rd for triples (6); 2nd for Runs Scored (25); First in RBIs (34); First in Best Strike-Out Ratio.
“She had zero strikeouts her Sophomore year, and zero her junior year,” Head Softball Coach Miriah Allgier said. “This year I can’t say the same but she did try her best. You can tell when that happened it really got her. We were all the whole team like ‘Don’t talk to her.'”
Wengler also tied for first in career batting average, Allgier said. She won All-District in sophomore and junior year, and All-Region in sophomore, junior and senior. In her senior year, she won All-State, making her the first Lady Cat in softball history to win it.
“So I am super proud of her,” Allgier said.
Cross Country Coach Joe Garrity introduced Junior Breanna Bone to the board.
Bone won medals in all 11 of her meets, and was the first female runner to break 20 minutes in the 5K, setting a new school record at 19:49. She was Conference Champion at Mineral Area, 7th place in Districts, and 14th place out of 164 in the State Championship.
Bone ran in the top 18% in the Nike Regionals in Indiana, a race independent of the school with 746 runners from several states.
She was also voted for the Coach’s Choice Award for Mineral Area Coaches.
High School Choir Teacher Ben Peppers talked about the achievements of Junior Ryley Heady and Senior Carter Hale to the school board.
He said on Nov. 8 they went to Cape High School for All-District choir performance. At that performance, during the lunch hour, they held All-State Choir auditions.
“Now this all state choir audition is a culmination of the score that they scored in all districts, added to the performance score they got for All-State,” Pepper said. With a 144 points total, only the top four join the choir, the top six for alternates, and the top 10 for honorable mention, Pepper explained.
“Carter Hale here has made the honorable mention for the base section,” Pepper said.
“And we got an email later on saying that they, we made them really spend a lot of deliberation moments,” Pepper said. “They said that it was one of the hardest choices they’ve had to make in probably the last decade.”
Pepper introduced Ryley Heady, who made it in the top four in the southeast district. This means she will perform at Tan-Tar-A at Osage Beach Missouri in January with the All-State Choir.
The All-State choir is made up of 208 members from 13 districts and it is one of the most prestigious honors within the Missouri Choral Directors Association, Pepper said.
“So this is some huge accomplishments for both of them. It is amazing, Pepper said. “I don’t think we’ve had an all stater in a few years, but no, I’m very proud.”
