STE. GENEVIEVE – Playing time has spiked for freshman Olivia Turner and senior Lacey LaMarr since beginning this season as varsity basketball newcomers.
Their fourth-quarter contributions were particularly integral as West County completed a double-digit comeback on the road Thursday night.
Maylee Merrill compiled a game-high 21 points with six rebounds and four steals, and knocked down a perfect 8-of-8 free throws in a 49-44 victory over Ste. Genevieve.
West County (4-2) committed 29 turnovers without injured starter Sadie Patterson available, and trailed 16-3 following a shooting slump throughout the first quarter.
Ste. Genevieve (2-4) stamped an initial 8-0 run with 3-pointers by Taylor Beckham and Lydia Brown, and increased the lead when Lilah Nix assisted cutting teammate Emma Goodwin.
Beckham netted a team-high 14 points while Brown scored eight and Aleah Filer chipped in six. The Dragons suffered some costly miscues down the stretch, and ended with 27 turnovers.
After being held to one field goal through eight minutes of action, the Lady Bulldogs found a spark when Merrill sank two 3-pointers and Alyssa Ludwig drove for a layup over a span of 1:22.
Brown found Nix for a layup after collecting a loose ball, then added a putback for the Dragons. But a steal by Caidence Buikema and Merrill layup beat the halftime buzzer to make it 20-15.
Beckham cashed in another steal, and Nix zipped an entry pass into Filer to restore a 27-17 separation before a 13-3 response brought the visitors even late in the third quarter.
Merrill coaxed in an off-balanced runner moments after going to the line, then picked up an errant Ste. Genevieve pass and immediately drained a tying 3-pointer at 30-30.
Beckham restored a 35-32 edge for the Dragons with a banked runner as intensity picked up during the final period. Turner answered with a triple to pull even again.
LaMarr starred off the bench with a game-high 11 rebounds, and added two crucial steals in the closing minutes. Her first of two putbacks gave West County a 38-35 lead.
Beckham countered with a big 3-pointer and subsequent third-chance basket, but West County marked another lead change as Turner connected from the perimeter at 41-40 with 1:52 remaining.
Filer caught a pass in the paint to score on the ensuing possession, but Merrill put the Lady Bulldogs ahead to stay from the line before LaMarr emerged with a steal.
Although Ludwig sank two more from the stripe to finish with 11 points and six rebounds, Ste. Gen. broke pressure and Nix found Emma Jokerst ahead to get within 45-44.
Merrill again hit free throws to make the margin three. LaMarr intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass near the sideline, and made a clinching putback with 12 seconds to play.
Turner tallied eight of her nine points in the fourth quarter, and Buikema supplied seven rebounds plus three steals for the Lady Bulldogs.
CeCe Kohler equaled Filer with four steals to lead the Ste. Genevieve defense. Brown amassed 10 rebounds, and Nix dished out five assists.
