STE. GENEVIEVE – Payton German scored a game-high 23 points on Friday afternoon to help South Iron defeat Ste. Genevieve for the second time in a week.
Allee Martin collected 12 rebounds while adding four steals and six points, and the Lady Panthers made 15-of-25 free throws in a 57-50 outcome.
Ellie Parker hit a shot in the paint to mark the last of seven lead changes, and South Iron (5-6) posted a 19-11 scoring edge during the second quarter.
Hailey Westmoreland finished an entry pass for her second basket after Rena Miller sank a 3-pointer, and the visitors established a 35-26 halftime advantage.
Taylor Beckham paced Ste. Genevieve (3-7) with 16 points and four steals. Aleah Filer provided 12 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with 4:20 remaining.
German flipped in a difficult shot after being bumped off balance on an end-to-end drive, then sank a runner through contact for a 3-point play at 48-35.
Beckham drained a 3-pointer after making a steal, and Emma Goodwin likewise connected from long range to pull the Dragons to within 53-45.
But a key putback by Martin helped the Lady Panthers hang on against late pressure. Miller secured nine rebounds, and equaled both Parker and Westmoreland with eight points.
Goodwin had eight points, and Lilah Nix made four assists for Ste. Genevieve, which looked inside to Filer for eight early points. Beckham powered through a foul to lead 13-7
German highlighted a 9-2 response by South Iron with her second and third 3-pointers of the game, resulting in a 16-15 edge as the first quarter concluded.
The Dragons were 11-of-16 from the line.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Liberty Christian 78, Bismarck 56
BOURBON, Mo. – The Bismarck boys basketball team returned to action from the holiday break with an immediate flourish on Saturday morning.
Talon Goodman, August Martinez and Austin Dunlap provided field goals as the Indians jumped ahead 8-0 in the first 44 seconds against Liberty Christian.
But the Eagles answered with an 11-0 surge of their own, and beat Bismarck down the floor for several uncontested layups to prevail 78-56 in the opening round of the Battle in Bourbon.
Willy Mueller controlled the paint with 17 of his game-high 22 points coming in the first half. Tommy Meyer dunked during the third quarter, and finished with 21.
Liberty Christian (11-2) closed the second period on a 10-0 run, highlighted by three straight baskets on fast breaks, and established a 40-26 halftime lead.
Phoenix Obermann added 19 points to the victory, and the second-seeded Eagles advanced to face Newburg while the Indians slipped into the fifth-place bracket Tuesday against New Haven.
Dunlap sank 8-of-9 free throws and tallied 18 points to pace Bismarck (5-6), which briefly regained the lead at 15-14 when the first quarter ended.
Ean Bone contributed multiple second-chance baskets among 14 points overall, and Goodman notched his second 3-pointer on the final possession to finish with 10.
BOYS WRESTLING
Fatima New Year’s Duals
WESTPHALIA, Mo. – The Valle Catholic wrestling team finished 3-3 during the Fatima New Year’s Duals tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors rattled off consecutive victories over Fatima 48-24, Adrian 59-12 and Steelville 60-6, and dropped narrow outcomes to Versailles 41-36, Macon 42-41 and St. Pius 40-38.
Lucas Drury starred throughout the event at 138 pounds, pinning all four of his opponents while being unopposed in two duals.
Jayce Bieser (120) was the other unbeaten competitor for Valle Catholic with a 4-0 record, posting two falls plus two technical falls and two match forfeits.
Cutter Abt (190) also collected four falls in five total bouts, and Nolan Prehm (285) registered three falls in four matches for the Warriors.
Kalan Fallert (126) went 3-2 with two falls and a 6-2 decision. Andrew Schilly (144) and Jonathan Knobloch (157) each had 2-1 marks with two falls.
Cammden Zipprich (106) and Teagon Peterson (132) evenly split four contested bouts apiece, and Clayton Stewart (113) earned one pin in three contests.
Valle Catholic was open at the 150, 165, 175 and 215 weight classes.
