WINTER WEATHER UPDATE & WARMING SHELTER INFORMATION

St. Francois County Sheriff Jeff Crites shares a smile and timely weather safety advice via friends from Mayberry.

The St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Management are closely monitoring the incoming weather system and will respond as conditions change.

Currently, no power outages are expected from this weather event, but teams are prepared to respond quickly if any occur.

Sheriff Jeff Crites reminds everyone to take a few simple steps to stay safe. Deputies will be out working through the weather, but your preparation at home and on the road makes a tremendous difference. Please keep the following in mind:

– Avoid unnecessary travel. If you don’t have to be on the roads, stay home. Conditions can change quickly.

– If you must drive, slow down. Give yourself extra time, increase your following distance, and keep your headlights on.

– Prepare your vehicle. Check your tires, battery, wipers, and fuel level. Keep blankets, water, and a phone charger with you.

– Stay informed. Monitor local weather updates and follow official alerts from emergency management.

– Check on neighbors. Older adults, those with medical needs, and anyone living alone may need a hand.

– Be cautious with alternative heat sources. Keep space heaters away from anything flammable and never use generators indoors.

If you or someone you know needs access to a warming shelter, please contact St. Francois County Central Dispatch at 573-431-3131. Dispatch will notify the appropriate personnel to open and staff a shelter.
