JONESBORO, Ark. – Five runs in the sixth inning helped the Mineral Area softball team claim the first game of a doubleheader over Arkansas State on Tuesday.
A’Kiayah Scales doubled twice while going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Central graduate Taylor Marler pitched all seven innings of an 8-3 road triumph.
Abby Holland walked and scored the go-ahead run on an error after Scales capped her 3-for-4 game with a single against reliever Bri Garriga.
The Cardinals added infield hits from Madison Yount and Emily Hochstatter, the second of which was thrown away. Three runs scored on that play to make the margin 7-3.
Hochstatter crossed the plate for the second time on a passed ball. Marler worked around two runners in the final frame, and struck out four while allowing seven hits in the complete game.
Leanna Mitts opened the scoring with an RBI single, and reached bases three times overall. Chelbi Poucher singled home Scales with two outs in the second for a 2-0 lead.
Ainsley Burnett walked and scored on a passed ball, but Arkansas State rallied for three runs in the home half of the third to draw even.
Rachel Rowald sparked the rally with an infield hit, and a crucial error cost Marler two unearned runs. Rebeka House forged a 3-3 tie with a two-run single..
Maddi Miles went 2-for-3 to help the Red Wolves. Both teams lost a runner between third and home.
Garriga allowed six runs and struck out six over 3 2/3 innings. Hannah Davenport worked the first two frames, then was preserved for game two.
Shamiya Moye finished 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, and Arkansas State secured the split with a 6-3 victory after scoring three times in the first inning.
Davenport went the distance with four strikeouts, and yielded three runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks for the win.
Adreya Braddy and Madilyn Elkins added two hits each, and Caty Parker singled while reaching base three times. The Red Wolves turned a double play in the top of the fourth.
Mineral Area (9-20-1) briefly held a 1-0 lead after Ki Bogan walked, stole two bases and came home on an RBI single from Ainsley Burnett.
Sophie Meyer brought the Cardinals to within 4-3 on an two-run double in the third, but Davenport limited the opposition to just one more hit.
Burnett notched two singles, and reached base twice more on errors for the Cardinals. Emma Wengler doubled and walked while Emily Hochstatter provided a double and scored a run.
Olivia Christensen surrendered five runs and walked five over 2 2/3 innings in the loss. Marler headed back to the circle, and fanned three with four hits allowed while obtaining the next 10 outs.
