FREDERICKTOWN – Kingston worked the offensive glass to score three consecutive field goals on second chances, and controlled the third quarter with a pivotal 12-0 scoring run.
Brady Thompson nailed a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 4:54 remaining in the game, and scored 24 before fouling out as the Cougars rallied past Fredericktown 59-55 on Monday night.
Jaxson Arnold netted eight of his 10 points during the pivotal stretch as Kingston (3-2) stifled the host Blackcats for 6 ½ minutes to erase their 31-19 halftime deficit.
Riley Samples gathered a blocked shot for a quick layup, Ashton Piel supplied the next putback and Arnold cashed in a three-shot possession to bolster the comeback.
The first of three critical calls against Fredericktown (2-2) occurred after Thompson blocked an initial layup attempt and senior guard Blake Terry-Breakfield picked up his fourth foul for charging.
Myles Maness, who accepted the collision, sustained his fourth foul moments later for the opposition. But Arnold nailed a corner 3 that put the Cougars ahead 36-34 before the period expired.
Star sophomore Tucker Reutzel missed his fourth game due to injury, and the Blackcats relied heavily on junior guard David Slinkard down the stretch.
Slinkard provided a game-high 27 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, and coaxed in a driving scoop after splitting defenders to bring Fredericktown even at 38-38.
Ashton Piel came up with a key steal for the Cougars, however, and Arnold found Thompson open at the top of the circle. Piel made the margin five on a layup after an illegal screen cost the Cats.
Slinkard countered a conventional 3-point play by Thompson with his fourth triple at 49-48. Kingston then turned a controversial sequence into a clinching 7-0 spurt.
Maness avoided oncoming pressure at the perimeter, slashed toward the paint and finished with a jump stop through contact to the frustration of Fredericktown coach Micah Reutzel.
A technical foul was given to the bench, resulting in two additional free throws plus possession with one minute remaining. Thompson added another 3-point play off a putback to make it 56-48.
Maness totaled nine points as the Cougars and first-year head coach Zeke Schupp bounced back from two straight losses at the Valley Tournament.
Terry-Breakfield scored 11 points and Andrew Robbins had 10 as Fredericktown had its first game competition since Thanksgiving 11 days earlier.
The Blackcats gained separation during the second quarter after leading 17-15. Terry-Breakfield hit a driving layup and short floater, and Slinkard struck twice in a row from long range.
Kingston had never beaten Fredericktown until 2021, and has since taken the last five meetings.
Potosi 73, Jefferson 50
POTOSI – Rhenn Mapes fueled a strong start by Potosi, and Kanaan Wilson answered a modest threat from Jefferson to secure an impressive 73-50 triumph at home on Monday night.
Mapes scored 13 of his 21 points in the first quarter, and Zane Blount added nine in the second to help the Trojans build a commanding 40-20 lead at intermission.
Talon Watson helped the Blue Jays draw closer with four baskets in the third quarter, but Kanaan Wilson netted 11 of his 19 down the stretch to seal the victory.
Thomas Lambing added 13 points for Potosi (4-0) on the heels of its tournament title last week in Sullivan. Zane Blount and Peyton Rowe provided nine points each.
The Trojans went 12-of-17 from the line to parlay a strong defensive showing in the battle of reigning district champions, and will travel to St. Clair on Friday.
Blayne Wilson paced Jefferson (3-2) with 12 points – all in the second half – while Colton Broadwater ended with eight.
