CLARKSDALE, Miss. – The Mineral Area baseball team introduced its final Mississippi road trip with plenty of power hitting and superb pitching on Friday.
Jett Sutton combined with relievers Trent Gallagher and Carson McDaniel for a one-hitter, and the Cardinals slugged four home runs to beat Coahoma 12-2 in game one of a doubleheader.
Tanner Fujino homered to lead off the contest, and tripled in another run while going 3-for-5. MAC steadily built a 6-0 advantage midway through the fourth inning.
Peyton Kight restored an 8-2 lead with a two-run blast in the fifth, and finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sam Weinstein and Cash Bailey went deep in the seventh.
Sutton allowed two runs on a single and three walks, and struck out six over four innings for the win. Gallagher threw a smooth fifth, and McDaniel retired all six of his batters faced.
Christian Kiper notched two hits, and picked up RBI doubles with Carson Shee in the fifth inning. Clemson Julian walked three times and crossed the plate twice for the Cardinals.
Janerrick Isler provided the lone Coahoma hit with an RBI double in the fourth, and scored on a ground out by Landon Rice.
Brendan Killinger was charged for six runs on seven hits and five walks over four innings in the loss.
Mineral Area 12, Coahoma 5
CLARKSDALE, Miss. – Mineral Area broke open a scoreless duel with eight runs in the top of the fourth inning, and dispatched Coahoma 12-5 in game two on Friday.
Carson Shee capped the pivotal outburst with a grand slam, and finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored overall. Tanner Fujino singled home a pair earlier in the frame, and also doubled in five chances.
Peyton Kight shared game-high honors with four RBI, and belted a two-run shot in the fifth to make it 10-0 while equaling Sam Weinstein and Clemson Julian at 2-for-4.
Aiden Dodson posted five strikeouts and allowed just one hit over four scoreless frames for the win. Dominic Sutton obtained five strikeouts over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Coahoma tallied five runs after Isaac Mitsdarffer plunked two batters and Ryan Souden failed to register an out against four others in the bottom of the fifth.
Landon Smith and Charles Fore doubled while Janerrick Isler lined a two-run single for the Tigers. Ryne Harrington allowed 10 runs – three earned – on nine hits over five innings.
Christian Kiper singled with two runs scored for MAC. Cash Bailey and Alex Whiteside also supplied one hit each.
Mineral Area 13, Coahoma 1
CLARKSDALE, Miss. – Tucker Thompson doubled twice and went 3-for-3 with four RBI on Saturday as Mineral Area beat Coahoma 13-1 in five innings.
Sam Weinstein was 3-for-4 with four RBI and crushed a grand slam – the second of the series for the Cardinals – during a six-run fifth frame that brought an early conclusion.
Clemson Julian singled to open the scoring, and Mineral Area built a 3-0 lead moments later as Cash Bailey and Thompson added RBI doubles in the second frame.
Thompson highlighted the third with a two-run double to make it 7-1. Bailey ended 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and Julian singled twice with two stolen bases.
Tyson Greenwood pitched four innings and struck out four in the win. He scattered four hits and one walk before JD Clarke worked a 1-2-3 fifth with two strikeouts.
Coahoma got an RBI double in the second from Bryce Williams. Conner Timbs also doubled while Tristen Williams and Massey singled.
Bryson Ford lasted the duration in defeat on 124 pitches for the Tigers, yielding 13 runs on 11 hits and six walks while fanning four.
Christian Kiper chipped in a double, and Brad Chaisson walked and scored twice for Mineral Area.
Mineral Area 16, Coahoma 0
CLARKSDALE, Miss. – Christian Kiper homered and singled during a nine-run first inning, and totaled four RBI as Mineral Area blanked Coahoma 16-0 for a series sweep later Saturday.
Kole Watermann added a two-run blast, and Sam Weinstein cleared the bases on a three-run double as seven more Cardinals crossed the plate in the second.
Carson Shee singled twice with two runs scored, and Cash Bailey notched a single and sacrifice fly. Tucker Thompson provided a two-RBI single while scoring twice.
Mineral Area (8-3) outscored the Tigers 53-8 during the four-game weekend, and will open the Region 16 schedule at home Thursday against St. Louis.
Aidan Hartholt compiled three strikeouts and allowed one hit over two innings for the win. Alex Jung fanned three of his batters faced before John Hood and Cole Murray capped the combined shutout.
Tanner Fujino doubled and teammates Mason Adams, Clemson Julian, Peyton Kight and Shadrick Salazar contributed singles to an overall 13-hit attack.
Janerrick Isler doubled in his lone at-bat as Coahoma (3-8) was limited to three hits. Charles Fore and James Washington III each singled.
Ashton Hall issued three walks along with five hits, and was replaced with two outs in the first inning after being tagged four five earned runs among eight total.
