Cities and school district meeting today

Two communities and one school district will hold meetings today, and another community has postponed its planned session for this evening.

Farmington City

The Farmington City Council will vote on an ordinance during regular session tonight that, if approved, will place a smoking ban before voters in the November election.

The council began discussions of placing the matter up for voters to decide earlier this year. Two public hearings were held – one in May, the second in June – giving residents an opportunity to express views on the possibility of a smoking ban. A second reading and council action is the first legislative item on the tentative agenda for tonight’s meeting.

Prior to the start of the regular session the council will hold three public hearings beginning at 6:30 p.m. The first is the proposed property tax rate at 0.4438 cents per $100 valuation. A first reading on the proposed rate is scheduled during regular session.

A public hearing is also scheduled for an application for a Planned Unit Development (PUD) for out lots A, B and C of Maple Village located at Maple Street and Bray Road near the Rural King under construction. The application was submitted by Taylor Engineering on behalf of Farmington Land ABG, LLC and will be up for a first and second reading and council action during regular session.

The third public hearing is regarding the annexation into the  corporate city limits of a tract of land on Overall Drive from Progress Drive to Dismuke Drive. The item is up for a first reading only during the regular session.

The regular session should begin immediately following the public hearings. Other items on the tentative agenda include the appointment of members to the Maple Valley Plaza Community Improvement District (the Menards property), and a first and second reading and council action on a contract with Hogan’s, Inc. for work on water tanks located on Boyce Street, Progress Drive and Farmington Correctional Center.

A resolution will also be read appointing members to serve on the Industrial Development Authority Board of Directors.

The meeting will be held in council chambers at 110 W. Columbia St. and is open to the public.

Bonne Terre City

A public hearing is being held at 6:30 p.m. at city hall to find a workable solution for all property owners in the shopping center area between Berry Road and Northwood Drive. That area has been severely impacted by significant rainfall and flooding this year.

Central School 

The Central School District’s board of education will meet today at 12:15 p.m. for a closed session executive board meeting, and then open back into open session at 12:30 p.m. for a regular meeting.  Both meetings will be held at 200 High Street in Park Hills. 

Among issues at the regular meeting, board members will be voting on approval of substitute teachers, policy 0342, and a tax rate for fiscal year 2016.

During the Communications portion of the meeting Assistant Superintendent Troy Bollinger should recognize the transportation department.

In the executive meeting, Dr. Mayberry, superintendent, in listed on the agenda to lead a discussion pertaining to personnel issues. 

Executive sessions are closed, but the public is welcomed at attend all regular board meetings.

Bismarck City

And Bismarck Mayor Seth Radford has announced that the city meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. at the old train depot has been postponed until the same time and location on Aug. 18.

Radford said he planned to be out of town this week seeking grant money “to help the city.”
