FHS Track Teams advance eight athletes to sectionals

The Fredericktown High School boys and girls track teams competed in the Class 3, District 1 meet, which began Saturday in Ste. Genevieve and was wrapped up Monday because of heavy rain over the weekend.

Fredericktown placed third among 12 boys programs with 97 points. The girls were tenth with 14 points.

Top four finishers were medalists in the district meet and qualified for the sectional meet, Saturday, at Hillsboro High School. Fredericktown’s boys medalists included Malachi Kyle in the triple jump title, Evan Burrows in the javelin, Blaine Fingers in the 200 and 400, Grant Shankle in the long and triple jumps, and Patrick Sikes in the 100-meter hurdles. Also, the 4X200 relay team of Fingers, Kyle, Logan Yancey, and Skylar Holland, and the 4X400 team of Shankle, Holland, Yancey, and Fingers qualified for sectionals.

For the FHS girls, Alexius Sikes qualified for sectionals in the javelin.

Record-breaking soccer season ends in district tournament

The Fredericktown High School girls soccer team lost 4-1 to Cape Notre Dame in the Class 2, District 1 tournament, Monday in Cape Girardeau.

Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Cats’ Arika Buxton scored to close the gap to one goal, but the Bulldogs scored twice in the second half to seal the victory.

Fredericktown finishes the 2019 season with a school-record 19 victories. The Cats were 19-4 on the season. Notre Dame, 21-1-1, played Perryville for the district championship, Tuesday (after press time).

Baseball Cats fall to Dragons in district quarterfinal

The FHS baseball team was eliminated from post season play, losing to De Soto, 5-1, in the Class 4, District Baseball Tournament, Monday, in Ste. Genevieve.

Fredericktown scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning, as Noah Korokis drove home Braeden Stockmann. The Dragons scored three in the bottom of the fourth and added two in the sixth.

Korokis had three of the Cats’ seven hits. Dylan Stafford had two. Clark Penuel went the full six innings, allowing five earned runs on ten hits. He struck out one batter and did not issue a walk.
