Yard of the Month

The original Yard of the Month sign has come out of retirement and is ready to be displayed in the winner's yard.

The Beautification Committee is bringing back the Yard of the Month this June.

"I always loved hearing about Yard of the Month because it was fun to drive by and see the beautiful winning yard," said Tessa Rehkop chair of the Yard of Month Committee. "One year my parents won, and I remember feeling so proud, especially since I helped mow that yard."

Rehkop said she is very excited to be a part of bringing Yard of the Month back and is looking forward to seeing what the community comes up with.

The June award will be given to a yard within Ward I, July will go to a Ward II yard and August will be in Ward III. Anyone can nominate a yard they think is deserving of the title at www.madisoncountycc/yard.

The winner for each month will have the "Yard of the Month" sign showcased in their yard for a month and will receive a $25 gift certificate to one of the local florists.

Rehkop said winners will have a months worth of bragging rights and will be showcased on the Beautification Committee Facebook page and in the Democrat News.

"This is a great way for everyone to contribute in making Madison County a beautiful place to live just by maintaining their own front yard," Rehkop said. "Not only do we have beautiful public buildings and parks but our private residences are beautiful as well. I also think this encourages some fun competition between neighbors and to take pride in their yards."

Rehkop said she encourages the community to get as creative as they would like.

"My cousin has the cutest yard gnome that's dressed up like Elvis," Rehkop said. "I love stuff like that. It just puts a smile on someone's face. Also, my neighbor has the most beautiful glass flowers that are made out of antique dishes."

Rehkop said you can never go wrong with a beautiful bed of flowers and it is not necessary to spend a lot of time or money to make your yard look nice. She said sometimes the simpler the better.

"Just do whatever fits you and have fun doing it," Rehkop said.

Nominations for the June Yard of the Month will be accepted until May 31 with a winner chosen in the beginning of June.
