Officials clear The Offsets while waiting for a dive team to arrive from Cape Girardeau.

A Chesterfield teen died while celebrating the Fourth of July with his friends at The Offsets outside Fredericktown.

Madison County Sheriff Katy McCutcheon said just before 2 p.m. July 4, Cole Duffell, 19, jumped off a cliff into the water at the recreation area and never resurfaced.

His body was recovered by a Cape Girardeau area dive team about 4:55 p.m. The body was found not far from where he jumped. Following normal protocol, an autopsy was performed in Farmington Thursday morning to determine the exact cause of death.

Assisting Madison County Sheriff's Department were the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Madison County EMS, the Cherokee Pass Fire Department, Cape Girardeau Fire Department, Jackson Fire Department and Sikeston DPS.

A Sikeston teen drowned in July of 2015 at the same recreation area after jumping from an 18-foot cliff. The 18-year-old boy reportedly panicked and went under water.

Offsets is located on Route OO just past the Fredericktown Airport.
