Theatre club presents ‘Little Red Robin Hood’

What do you get when a big sister – made to baby-sit her younger siblings –makes up a bedtime story meshing one with the other?

The answer can be found in North County High School Theatre Club’s production of “Little Red Robin Hood.” The show will be presented beginning at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 and 9 in the North County High School auditorium.

Ticket prices for the show are $3 for students, $4 for adults. Children 3 and under will be admitted for free.

High School English Instructor Heidi Theis is directing her first production as sponsor of the theatre club. She said the play is a fun event for both the actors and the audience.

“It’s a fairy tale mix-up. You’ll have some characters that are dual characters from fairy tales and other stories,” said Theis.

The show opens up with “Carla”, played by Senior Tiffani Tucker, making up a story for her brother and sister.

“I’m trying to tell them a bedtime story as fast as possible because I’m baby-sitting them,” she said.

Tucker believes the incorporation of various fairy tales will delight the audience.

“There’s not just one (fairy tale). There are all different kinds of characters. Everyone can enjoy it,” she said.

Throughout the play, the characters in Carla’s story interact with her as she tells her tale.

Olivia Capps plays the title role. She explained her character is best described as a combination of Little Red Riding Hood and Robin Hood.

“I fight against the Big Bad Wolf, but I’m also fighting to protect the poor and take the money from the rich to give to the poor,” said Capps.

This is the eighth production for the North County High School junior. She’s been involved in theatre since middle school and serves as the president of the theatre club. She believes the audience will enjoy the antics of the Big Bad Wolf and the “Naughty Hams.”

Playing the role of the Big Bad Wolf is junior Abe Jackson. He admitted the role of the wolf was the one he’d hoped for during auditions.

“It’s so energetic and fun and that’s the kind of person I am. I can’t sit still. That’s what this character is and that’s what appealed to me,” he said.

Jackson said the character’s name does not necessarily represent him and the audience will be surprised.

Thies said the cast of 25 has given her much support during her first production.

“They help me quite a bit. It’s been a fun experience. I’ve always been interested in theatre but I’ve never had the opportunity. I love it. It’s really great and a lot of fun,” she said.

Lending a hand with the technical side of the production are students in the Theatre Arts class taught by Stephen Cross. The stage manager for the show is Mariana Falls. Thies thanked Falls for her help as the manager, and for a time Falls was on stage sitting in for one of the actors.

“She’s juggling trying out for basketball and working with the show. I appreciate her help so much,” said Theis.

The technology program at the school helped construct the “dungeon” for the show.

Thies also expressed her appreciation to the theatre department at Mineral Area College for allowing the school to borrow costumes and props for the production.
