For kids who have ever wanted to go back in time, meet an alien, discover heroes and villains of Greek mythology, try some detective work, solve mysteries, learn to bake, learn to sew, and many, many more exciting things – your chance is coming soon.

As summer quickly approaches the horizon, the time to sign up for the College for Kids program at Mineral Area College to be held in July is now.

There are three session in this year’s program – July 8-12, July 15-19, and July 22-26. Each week has two separate sessions, one for grades 2-3 and one for grades 4-8. Classes are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Grade levels are based on the grade the student will enter in the fall of 2019.

Students may take both a morning and afternoon block (blocks include 2 classes each) or just take a single morning (8-11:05 a.m.) or afternoon block (11:55 a.m.-3 p.m.; taking a single course is not an option. A lunch break will occur each day between the morning and afternoon blocks and students staying through the lunch hour should bring a lunch in an insulated bag. (Lunch will not be served by the college and no refrigerator or microwave will be available).

Classes for grades 2-3 include but are not limited to Next Top Baker, Science Saves Lives, CSI, and Sew Much Fun. Classes for grades 4-8 include Candy Science, K-Nex Engineering, Babysitting Basics, and Kidnapped: The Case of Jason Worth.

All courses are $35 each, except the following: Babysitting Basics ($47 – includes book), Percy Jackson Explosion Camp and Writer’s Workshop ($70 each as they are three-hour blocks).

A limited number of $110 scholarships are available and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for students who qualify for free or reduced lunches. A copy of the guardian’s 2019 tax return must accompany the registration form to apply for scholarships. Only one scholarship per family will be awarded.

There is a $10 registration fee per child to sign up for the summer program that must be paid along with full payment for courses at the time of application. Registration fees are waived if received before June 8.

A few reminders are that classes are filled also on a first-come, first-served basis, so a second choice should be included just in case a particular course is already filled. Transportation is not provided – parents should drop off and pick up children on time each day. Cancellations or requests for refund must be submitted seven days prior to the start of the first course. Please note that students who are dismissed due to disruptive behavior will not be eligible for a refund.

Completed applications and payment can be mailed to: MAC College for Kids, PO Box 1000, Park Hills, MO 63601. Registration forms and course descriptions can be found by visiting https://mineralarea.edu/media/1921/2019_college-for-kids_schedule.pdf

Students will receive their schedules by mail the last week of June. If any changes are needed please contact the MAC Continuing Education Department at 573-518-2280 and every effort will be made to accommodate needed corrections.
