“Jobs”

I had a survey from DeWalt Tools recently. It came on the Internet. I ended the survey commenting on the fact we need more jobs in America to held end the recession. I asked the company if they would consider making some of their tools here in America.

Jobs are one of the most important things this economy needs at the moment. I hear a lot of “talk” about jobs. I see a lot of “hype” in news releases. But I don’t see much changing in my little corner of the world.

Back in the day, the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) was created by the federal government to help  create work. Projects like Mt. Rushmore put money in workers pockets and food on the table. We may not need another Mt. Rushmore project, but we do need more jobs. For instance, I think we need more transportation opportunities in Fredericktown. A taxicab would be nice. Or maybe a bus that runs the same route during the week. Don’t get me wrong. SMTS is doing a great job, but we need more options because more people need other ways of getting to work during off hours.

How about a small car rental place, with one or two cars out by the airport?

Anyone care for a bakery, homemade donut shop or taco barn of some type? National companies seldom move into a rural area due to demographics. (Otherwise, I’d be eating at Denny’s).

Security is important.  Police departments are often stretched thin in these financially demanding times. Private security is one possible way to help the community stay safe and stay employed.

I see plenty of opportunities for  business start-ups in Fredericktown. I just don’t see any real backing, other than posturing by some federal politicians. Stop talking and start doing.

While I was watching the “Big Game” Sunday, I asked Celeste to look up the cost of a “Big Game” ticket.  Big Game ticket prices are beyond belief. I am not a huge sports fan like some people, and one reason is the amount of money poured into sports. So many of the sports products are made in China now too. It is great for children to see sports, and have heroes to look up to. But they should also be made to realize the competitive spirit is also a good thing in the world of business at some age. Sports is a very successful business in America. Learning about both game plans (on the field and in the board room) will provide a new generation of entrepreneurs and help insure the American way of life prevails.

I’ll never see a ‘live big game’ in person. And I know sports does generate jobs. But I would like to see that much effort and money distributed throughout America for job creation in more than just sports. We can fill the stadiums, so lets fill the empty store fronts too.

Families are struggling out there all over. So, if our federal government can’t punt the job ball back onto the employment field, maybe a different type of game plan (like the CCC) is what we need.
