James and Priscilla Wade celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on March 25th. Both are residents at NHC Healthcare of Desloge and the health center threw them a party in honor of this joyous occasion. NHC bought cupcakes for the family from Sweet Treats Bakery located in Desloge. When asked what the secret to their marriage is, James stated, “Life is too short to fight and fuss.”
James and Priscilla were high school sweethearts. During their spring break, when James was 20 and Priscilla 17, they took a trip to Herman, Missouri to look for work. Instead they eloped and had a secret wedding. The Wades kept this from their family for some time until some aunts who lived in Herman saw it in the local newspaper. According to Priscilla, her parents were very upset about the secret marriage, but were soon supportive of their marriage.
James and Priscilla are very involved in their church, Flat River Christian Church, where James serves as an elder. Together they have 5 children; Kathleen Reeves of O'Fallon, Jim Wade of Sunnyville, CA, Bill Wade of Park Hills, and Patty Wade of Florissant. They have 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Their children have fond memories of their parents and one lesson they learned, “Don't marry because you want to live with someone, marry because you cannot live without them.” Friends say, James and Priscilla have always been there to help those in need and to help their community any way they can.
