Features added to Park Hills Trunk n Treat

Trick-or-treaters attending this year’s Park Hills Trunk n Treat event will receive more than just candy as they make their way through the treat sponsors participating in the free, family-friendly evening.

Organized by the Downtown Park Hills Association, the event takes place on Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the public parking lot next to the All Occasions Hall at 233 West Main Street.

New to the event this year, trick-or-treaters can stop off at the former Flat River Movie Theater building, now the newly transformed River Worship Centre, for some music, treats, costumes and fun from 5 to 8 p.m.

“We’ve got a live DJ that’s going to be here doing old school Halloween jams,” said Pastor DJ Edwards. “We’re gonna fill the whole lobby with low-lying fog that’ll be creeping out the front steps and we’re gonna have a big cut-out in here of a pumpkin patch and cornstalks that people can put their faces through and get their picture taken.

“We’ll also have free popcorn, free soda and we’re going to be handing out treat bags. And we know that the line for Trunk n Treat is always long — it’s a huge line — and so what we’re gonna do is have them come in the door and get all their stuff — we’ll have the picture thing set up — and they’ll go down the little hallway and then come out another door.”

Downtown Park Hills Association President David Easter said the line for the event will start in a slightly different location.

“We’ll start the line in front of the All Occasions Hall right by their door with the line forming down the steps, back toward the flower shop and around the corner,” he said. “And All Occasions will be giving away treats as well.”

The Park Hills Fire Department will also be adding something new to the event this year.

“We will have the brand new fire truck out in front of the municipal parking lot,” Easter said, “and they’ll be giving out candy as well.”

All available treat sponsor spaces at the parking lot have been filled with local businesses and organizations who’ll be passing out candy and other prizes to area trick-or-treaters.

“The city participates, Hardees gives away coupons and the (Not Just Comix) store gives away free comics every year,” said Easter. “We have various businesses and churches and organizations that participate as well.”

Previous years have had more than 1,000 children decked out in creative and fun costumes trick-or-treating at the event.

“We usually have over a thousand, depending on the weather and what other events are happening,” Easter said. “We’ll be glad to see people here in the downtown area for this event again this year.”

This is a free, fun, family event, geared toward providing a safe trick-or-treating experience for area children of all ages.
