Robert Fite

Robert E. Lee Fite, 76, of Fredericktown (formerly Portageville) died July 26, 2006.

He was born August 24, 1929, a son of the late Dee M. Fite and Bertha Ellen (Clark) Fite.

On October 20, 1946 at Portageville, he was married to Helen (nee -Lankford) by Reverend Harvey Ahart.

Mr. Fite is survived by his wife, Helen Fite.

He is also survived by his children: Kayee (Fite) Thompson of Fredericktown, Robert Allen Fite of Silva, Missouri, Vila &#8220Joan” Roberts of Robertsville, Missouri, Karonia &#8220Ronnie” Beck of Marquand, Jerry W. Fite Sr. of Fredericktown and Tiffany (Fite) Hobough of Fredericktown; and one sister, Mary (Fite) Odle-Rakers of St. Charles, Missouri.

Mr. Fite had 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Mr. Fite was a grain miller and welder before his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting in his younger days. He loved animals and was a devoted loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Private services were held in Caruthersville, Missouri.

Grace (Vandergriff) Head-Friese

Grace (Vandergriff) Head- Friese, 90, of Fredericktown died July 25, 2006 at Stockhoff Memorial Nursing Home in Fredericktown.

She was born August 1, 1915 in Knob Lick, Missouri, a daughter of Thomas and Martha (Wampler) Vandergriff.

Ms. Friese was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Betty Head; one grandson, Michael Head; eight sisters, Lottie, Mary, Francis, Lena Ann, Lena Faye, Laura, Georgia and Nellie; and one brother John; and the father of her children, Doyle &#8220Bus” Head.

Ms. Friese is survived by two sons, Carl Head of Fredericktown and Thomas Head of Herculaneum; three daughters, Barbara Underwood and Janie Duncan both of Park Hills and Edna Boatright of Fredericktown; and one sister, Maggie Stucker.

Ms. Friese had 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and was awaiting the arrival of a great-great-granddaughter.

Her hobbies were crocheting, reading, and watching soap operas. Most of all she enjoyed cooking for everyone at holiday time and spending time with her family.

Ms. Friese was of the Baptist faith.

Services were held July 28, 2006 at Wilson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were: Steve Head, Terry Hollingsworth, Bruce Head, Wayne Boatright, Michael Head and Keith Lay. Honorary pallbearer was Carl Duncan.

Julia Mildred Herbert

Julia Mildred Herbert, 94 of Jackson, Missouri, died August 2, 2006 at Saint Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

She was born June 2, 1912 in Doniphan, Missouri, a daughter of Elisha Alonzo and Effie Jane Ash Highfill.

She first married Floyd Roberts in 1931.

On March 5, 1933 she married Virgil Payne who preceded her in death on July of 1962.

On August 5, 1965 she married Joseph Herbert who preceded her in death In November 1988.

Mrs. Herbert was a homemaker and a member of the Union Light Congregational Methodist Church.

Survivors include; one son Lonzo Junior Roberts of Imperial, Missouri; and one daughter Margie Beakley of Jackson.

Mrs. Herbert had ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were one daughter Betty June Payne and two brothers.

Funeral Services were held, August 5, 2006 at the Union Light Congregational Methodist Church with the Reverend Donald Sander and Reverend David McCutcheon officiating.

Burial was at Union Light Cemetery near Marquand.

Janice Lane ‘Shug” Huffman

Janice Lane &#8220Shug” Huffman, 67, of Farmington died on August 1, 2006, at her residence.

She was born February 5, 1939, in Womack, the daughter of the late Fred and Retta (Harris) Payne. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Huffman; and a brother, Fred Payne.

She is survived by two sons, Mike Huffman of Farmington, and Stanley Huffman of Fredericktown; two daughters, Mrs. Licia Pirtle and Mrs. Mary Hendrix, both of Farmington; by two brothers, Ronnie Payne, Bill Payne, both of Farmington; three sisters, Gail Huffman of St. Louis, Joyce Reagan of Desloge, and Mrs. Sandra Wells of Bonne Terre; and half-brother, Harry Blevins of St. Louis.

She had ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Mrs. Huffman attended the Desloge First Church of God.

At one time she had been active as a member of the 4H Club.

Services were held August 6, 2006 at the Cozean Chapel, with Pastor Jimmy Muse officiating. Burial was at Hillview Memorial Gardens.

Mary K. Wagner

Mary K. Wagner, 72, of Cherokee Pass died August 2, 2006 at her home.

She was born August 6, 1933 in Madison County, a daughter of Roy and Anne (Ragsdale) Hovis.

In Tunica, Mississippi, she was married to Ralph Russell Wagner who preceded her in death on December 13, 1985.

Mrs. Wagner was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John Hovis and one niece, Joyce Bowman.

She is survived by one daughter, Edie Warren of Cherokee Pass; and one step-daughter, Nancy Pheppercorn of St. Louis.

Mrs. Wagner had five grandchildren, one niece, one nephew and several friends.

She worked as a housekeeper and caregiver most of her life. She worked at the Long Horn Hotel in Cherokee Pass and on the Stephens Farms.

Mrs. Wagner’s hobbies included feeding and watching hummingbirds, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was of the Pentecostal faith.

Services were held August 5, 2006 at Wilson Funeral Home with Brother Clyde Bess officiating. Burial was at Antioch Cemetery near Fredericktown.

Pallbearers were: Robert Cape, Eugene Jordon, John Hovis, Dennis Graham, Tim Warren and Ernie Robinson.

Cory Torrez

Cory Torrez, 22, of Fredericktown died July 30, 2006 in Fredericktown.

He was born September 15, 1983, in Farmington, Missouri, a son of George and Joyce Torrez.

Mr. Torrez was preceded in death by his grandfather, George Torrez Sr., and Preston Hovis; and grandmother, Teresa Torrez.

Mr. Torrez is survived by his parents; his grandmother, Marie Hovis of Fredericktown; one brother, Shawn Torrez of Fredericktown; and three sisters, Dawnette Geen, Shannon Rehkop and Camey White all of Fredericktown.

He is also survived by nine nieces.

Mr. Torrez was a member of Coppermines Free Will Baptist Church and enjoyed trucks, his dog Champ, and his goats.

Services were held August 2, 2006 at Follis and Sons Funeral Home with Pastor Darren Alvis officiating. Burial was at Marcus Memorial Park Cemetery in Fredericktown.

Pallbearers were: Shawn Torrez, Jeremy Rehkop, Tim Geen, Lance White, Cory Lawson, and Josh Grisham.

Joshua Michael Parsons

Joshua Michael Parsons, 19, of Fredericktown died July 30, 2006 in Fredericktown.

He was born August 29, 1986 in Davenport, Iowa, a son of Jerry and Rebecca Parsons.

Mr. Parsons is survived by two sisters, Jessica Coffman of Park Hills; and Hannah Parsons of Fredericktown.

Services were held August 2, 2006 at Follis and Sons Funeral Home with Richard Miller officiating.

Pallbearers were: Thomas Coffman, Shawn Torrez, Pete Sliwa, Terry Simons, Michael Simons, and Ron Wasson.

Charles Edwin Yow

Charles Edwin Yow, 49, of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi died July 20, 2006 at Bay St. Louis.

He was a son of Nathan and Marlene Yow of St. Louis.

He was married to Cheryl Nichols Yow.

Mr. Yow is survived by his parents; his wife; two sons, Charles E. Yow Esq. of Oxford, Mississippi and Nathan A. Yow of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; one daughter, Sarah Yow of Indianapolis, Indiana; and one brother, Craig Yow of St. Louis, Missouri.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bay St. Louis.

Mr. Yow was a member of the American Trail Lawyers Association; Director of Native American Heritage Initiatives; Sr Partner of Red Cloud Law Firm; United Cherokee nation of Alabama and member of the Confederate Veterans.

Services were held July 29, 2006 at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.

Graveside service was held July 31, 2006 at Marcus Memorial Park Cemetery in Fredericktown, Missouri.

Amylee Huffman

Amylee Huffman, 82, of Fredericktown died July 18, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kirkwood, Missouri.

She was born December 13, 1923 in Fredericktown, a daughter of Otto Lafayette and Mabel Laura (Dollar) Killian.

On August 5, 1941 in Mine LaMotte, she was married to Truman James Huffman who survives at the home.

Mrs., Huffman is also survived by three sons, Harry Huffman of Brimfield, Massachusetts, Danny Huffman of Wareham, Massachusetts and Jeff Huffman of Fredericktown; three daughters, Carolyn Rouse of Fredericktown, Kathy Thebeau of Desoto, Missouri and Judy Steska of Farmington; three brothers, Joe Killian of St. Charles, Harold Killian of New Windsor, New York and Bill Killian of Fredericktown; and two sisters, Rose Polete of Festus and Faye Olsen of Missoula, Montana.

Mrs. Huffman had 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Brian Rouse, and one granddaughter, Sarah Huffman, one great-grandson, Jesse Huffman, and one son-in-law, Donald Rouse.

Mrs. Huffman was a 1940 graduate of Mine LaMotte High School, attended college and later taught school at several one-room schools throughout Madison County. She also worked for several local doctors as a medical secretary; including 18 years with Dr. George.

Mrs. Huffman’s hobbies were reading, listening to gospel singing, enjoying photographs and watching game shows.

Mrs. Huffman was a devoted wife of the Reverend Truman Huffman for 64 years and 11 months, and a loving mother and grandmother.

She was a faithful member of Twin Oaks Free Will Baptist Church in Fredericktown.

Services were held July 22, 2006 at Twin Oaks Free Will Baptist Church with Brother Raymond Michael and Brother Bob Thebeau officiating. Burial was at Twin Oaks Cemetery in Fredericktown.

Pallbearers were: Steven Rouse, Craig Huffman, Marc Huffman, Faron Thebeau, Ben Thebeau, Brett Thebeau and Tyler Huffman. Honorary pallbearer was Tracy Huffman.

John Walter Breeden

John Walter Breeden, 82, of Fredericktown died August 2, 2006 at Ozark Manor in Fredericktown.

He was born June 8, 1924 in Washington, Missouri, a son of John and Viola Breeden.

On June 6, 1964 he was married to Ruby at Waynesville, Missouri.

Mr. Breeden is survived by his wife Ruby Breeden; one son, John C. Breeden of Warrenton, Missouri; two brothers, Kenneth J. Breeden of St. Louis and Carl E. Breeden of St. Peters, Missouri; and four sisters, Dorothy N. Morrissey of Ballwin, Missouri, Laverne E. Haase of Fairfield, Connecticut, Dolores B. Gardner of Washington, Missouri, and June E. Craig of Union, Missouri.

He had three grandchildren.

Mr. Breeden was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed guitar playing and fishing.

He was a W.W.II veteran having served as a military police officer.

Services were held August 5, 2006 at Follis and Son’s Chapel with Reverend Tom Johnson officiating. Burial was at St. Peters Cemetery in Washington, Missouri.

Pallbearers were: John D. Breeden, Jared E. Breeden, John L. Breeden and Frank Craig Jr.

Robert Morris Deneke

Robert &#8220Bob” Morris Deneke, 89, formerly of Fredericktown, died Tuesday, August 25, 2004, in Columbia. Interment of ashes will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2006 at Marcus Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home. The Rev. Rick Lasley will officiate.

Mr. Deneke was born on Christmas Day, 1914, in Fredericktown, to Samuel F. and Ella L. Johnson Deneke. He attended Central Methodist College in Fayette. When Pearl Harbor was attacked he enlisted in the Navy, becoming part of the Seabees, 93rd Battalion.

On October 18, 1942 he married his hometown sweetheart Marjorie Anna Leslie of Fredericktown. After WWII ended, he joined with brother Sam to form Deneke and Deneke, an architectural and engineering partnership. The firm designed various churches, schools, medical facilities, and other commercial buildings in Missouri. In the early 1960s he joined a St. Louis architectural firm from which he retired in 1985. For several more years, he continued to work as a consulting architect in Fulton, Mo.

Mr. Deneke was a Methodist, and was a member of the Toastmasters Club of Clayton. He enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, playing big band clarinet and classical piano.

Survivors at the time of his death included his wife, Marge; daughter Nancy Kaul (Arthur) of Hattiesburg, Miss.; daughter Laura Deneke of Columbia; and daughter Janet Deneke of Glasgow.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Sam, and sister Margaret.

Marjorie &#8220Marge” Anna Deneke

Marjorie &#8220Marge” Anna Deneke, 89, formerly of Fredericktown, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, in Columbia. Interment of ashes will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2006, at Marcus Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home. The Rev. Rick Lasley will officiate.

Mrs. Deneke was born on July 31, 1916, in Morley, Mo., to Robert H. and Opal Luckey Leslie. She attended Southeast Missouri State Teachers College in Cape Girardeau and then moved to Fredericktown, where she met Robert M. Deneke. After a courtship that included playing piano duets and dancing at big band shows, they began their 62-year marriage on October 18, 1942.

While Mr. Deneke was stationed in the Pacific as a Navy Seabee during WWII, Marge worked at Weingarten during construction of the prisoner-of-war camp there. In 1945 she went to Kirtland Field U.S. Army Air Base in Albuquerque, N.M. as a civilian employee. After the war Marge and Bob started their family in Fredericktown. From 1960 until retirement Marge enjoyed a career in hospital administration in Fredericktown and in Fulton. She was also employed by a hospital consulting firm.

Mrs. Deneke was a Girl Scout troop leader, and was a member of Jayceettes, White Shrine, and Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed flower gardening, writing short verses, and visiting friends at the Presbyterian Manor. She treasured the memories of annual family houseboat vacations on Kentucky Lake.

Survivors include daughter Nancy Kaul of Hattiesburg, Miss.; daughter Laura Deneke of Columbia; and daughter Janet Deneke of Glasgow.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob and two brothers, Carle and Robert, Jr.

William Samuel Whitener

William Samuel &#8220Bill Sam” Whitener, 77, of Marquand, Missouri died August 6, 2006 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born January 5, 1929 in Marquand, the fifth and last child of William Elijah and Nancy (Schell) Whitener.

On January 22, 1949, at Patton, Missouri, he was married to Lela Faye Easley.

Mr. Whitener was a farmer in Bollinger County all of his life.

He was a lifelong member of Liberty Congregational Methodist Church where he served as a trustee and deacon for many years.

Mr. Whitener served on the board of Calvary Hilltop camp for many years.

He loved to spend time with his family and friends and also loved to hunt and fish.

Mr. Whitener is survived by his wife, Faye Whitener; daughter Sandy Hampton of North Pole, Alaska; and his sisters, Katherine Slinkard of Marquand, Dorothy Lacy of Fredericktown, and Doris O’Bannon of Stevensville, Montana. He is also survived by four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren nieces, nephews and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Wendell &#8220Jack” Whitener.

Services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday at Liberty Congregational Methodist Church off Highway A In Marquand, Missouri with the Reverend Jimmie Corbin and the Reverend Kirby Grindstaff and the Reverend Jamie Hovis officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: William Yount, Justin Conrad, Chris Conrad, Craig Yount, Steve Jordan and Rick McMillan.
