Several firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched to an overturned fuel tanker truck on Old Highway C near Route 21 in Washington County on Monday.

According to the accident report, at 11:40 a.m., a 2019 Freightliner pulling a 2009 Heil tanker trailer and driven by Terrence Schreiber, 56, of Festus, was traveling westbound on Old Highway C when the right rear tire of the vehicle traveled off the roadway causing the truck to overturn and land in a ditch on the right side of the road directly in front of Valley High School.

A Washington County deputy was the first on the scene and quickly called for firefighters and HAZMAT crews to respond to the incident. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources was also contacted to address the incident.

Belgrade Fire Department was the first responding fire department and coordinated the scene. A request for additional manpower was dispatched about 3 p.m. to aid in the efforts.

Belgrade Assistant Fire Chef Ryan Hagermann said that an estimated 300 gallons of unleaded gasoline had leaked out of the tank but was contained.

A wrecker tow truck was called to pull the tanker from the ditch. The crews then sprayed the ground and the tanker with fire retardant foam while other crew members began prepping for the truck to be overturned by rigging cables and draining the remaining fuel from the tanker. The effort took several hours and continued into the evening.

Schreiber was taken to Washington County Memorial Hospital by Washington County Ambulance where he was treated for minor injuries.
