Tom Jennings is the winner of the Daily Journal’s Best Buck 2017 contest. For his win he will take home a new Can Am Outlander 450 ATV valued at $7,299 and $1,500 in gift cards.
It was a near record deer season in Missouri. Hunters harvested 191,368 deer in the November seasons alone, including 99,431 antlered bucks.
Here close to home, more than 120 hunters entered pictures of them and their buck in our Best Buck Contest. Then for the past few weeks readers could go online to www.dailyjournalonline.com and cast votes for their favorite hunter. The contest was a “winner-takes-all” deal where the hunter with the most votes wins the ATV and both gift cards.
And Jennings was the favorite. He and his 10-point Washington County buck received the most votes. The margin between the top nine runner ups was only a few hundred votes separating each one from the next highest vote getter.
Be watching the Daily Journal website starting today for a photo gallery of the top 10 hunters by votes cast by the readers.
Coming in second in votes was Olivia Drummond. Jason Wengler was third with his daughter Emma and their deer. Bryan Boesing and his two sons came in fourth in votes. And Holly Inman rounded out the top five.
As for Jennings, he harvested his monster buck on opening day of the November firearms portion of the fall deer season.
“I’ll be giving Tom a call Saturday morning to make arrangements for him to pick up his new ATV and other winnings,” said Daily Journal Managing Editor Doug Smith. “I want to congratulate him and all the other more than 120 hunters who entered our contest this year.”
Here’s what Jennings won. From Midwest Sports Center in Farmington (www.midwestsportscenter.com) a new 2017 Can Am Outlander 450. The machine retails for $7,299.
From Hoods Discount Home Centers (www.hoodshomecenters.com) a $1,000 gift card to be used for the purchase of merchandise at any Hoods retail outlet.
And from Sam Scism Ford Lincoln (www.scismford.com) a $500 gift card for use wherever credit/debit cards are accepted.
Additionally, every hunter who entered this year's contest receives a free Little Caesar's Pizza courtesy of the Little Caesar's stores in Farmington and Desloge. Participants can stop by the Daily Journal office in Park Hills during business hours anytime after Dec. 13 and pick up the certificate to take to Little Caesar's for the free pizza.
As for Best Buck Contest 2018, Smith said staff at the Daily Journal have already discussed ways to improve the contest next year. There’s talk of more prizes and awarding winnings to the top two or three winners instead of the winner-takes-all way it’s been done the past two years.
Last year Kory Schweiss won a new Suzuki ATV. This year Tom Jennings won a new Can Am Outlander ATV. Who will win next year? It might just be you.
The Daily Journal wants to thank the sponsors - Midwest Sports Center, Hoods Discount Home Centers, Sam Scism Ford Lincoln, Little Caesar's - for their participation in this year's contest.
