An arrest has been made in a suspected arson in the 700 block of Maple Street in Farmington that occurred Thursday afternoon.

According to Lt. Jeff Crites of the Farmington Police Department, eyewitnesses at the scene identified the suspect.

“We arrested a 51-year-old male who also resides in the trailer park, and received evidence that will be forwarded to the Missouri State Fire Marshal for his investigation,” Crites said. “We have eyewitnesses that the subject returned to the scene in a vehicle that was seen leaving at the time of the fire. The eyewitnesses identified the individual as the person involved.”

Crites explained that an investigation at the scene also revealed that there had been an ongoing feud between two residents, and ultimately the individual confessed that it was over a stolen pack of cigarettes.

“He did return to the scene while we were still there,” he said. “We were able to positively identify him as the (suspect) involved.”

The fire was dispatched at 2:40 p.m. Farmington and Doe Run fire departments responded.

"It was an occupied residence," said Farmington Fire Chief Todd Mecey. "The fire was extinguished around three minutes from the time of arrival. There was minor fire damage. Smoke damage is throughout the residence.

No injuries have been reported.
