Icy road conditions were the cause of a fatality accident at around 2 p.m. Friday on Highway 221, two miles north of Pilot Knob in Iron County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a southbound 2001 Jeep Cherokee driven by Betty J. Rothlisberger, 80, of Pilot Knob lost control on the ice-covered roadway and struck a tree.

Her passenger, Edward A. Rothlisberger, 72, also of Pilot Knob was pronounced dead at the scene by Iron County Coroner Tony Cole at 2:30 p.m. The body was taken to the coroner's office in Ironton.

The driver was transported by ambulance to Iron County Medical Center in Pilot Knob.

According to the patrol, neither of the Rothlisbergers were wearing seat belts at the time the accident occurred.

The serious accident was just the first of a long list of weather-related accidents throughout the afternoon and evening.
