MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Allan D. Shinn, 81, of Long Beach, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at 1:25 am in Hospice Franciscan Communities, Michigan City, Indiana.
Al was born October 15, 1934, in Farmington, Missouri, the only child of the late Herman and Eula (Thompson) Shinn. On January 29, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, he married Georgiana Lewis.
Al is survived by his wife of 61 years, Georgiana; daughter, Jane (Larry) Wall of Long Beach, Indiana; four sons, Edwin Shinn of Michigan City, Indiana, Joseph (Debra) Shinn of Michigan City, Indiana, Paul (Gretchen) Shinn of Chesterton, Indiana, and David Shinn of Michigan City, Indiana; twelve grandchildren, Patricia Shinn, Colleen (Kevin) Lane, Elliott Shinn, Ryan (Kelly Kroczek) Wall, Amber Collins, Elizabeth Shinn, Kendall Shinn, Margaret Shinn, Nathan Shinn, Dylan Shinn, Olivia Shinn and Madelyn Shinn; six great-grandchildren, Lily Allen, Savanna Meden, Piper Collins, Moira Lane, Vivien Wall and Eva Lane; sister-in-law, Dolores Hood; nephew, Robert D. Hood; niece, Patricia McDonald; and special-companion Golden Retriever, Allie;

He was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Robert G. Hood; and niece, Georgiana Hood.
Al graduated from Farmington High School in 1951 and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia. Prior to beginning his college career, he signed to play professional baseball with the New York Giants Baseball Organization, then later was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Organization. After a successful baseball career, he managed some professional teams, and he and his brother-in-law brought the first professional team to Michigan City with players from the Giants organization and they were named the Whitecaps. He then formed Shinn Construction Co. until his retirement. Al is to be remembered as a principal teacher and leader of baseball skills and supported all age groups of baseball players in the Michigan City community for many years.
Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2016, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana. Visitation resumes 9 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2016, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel with Rev. Keith McClellan officiating. Burial will follow in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City, Indiana.
