Electoral College

  • 0

To The Editor,

The Electoral College is a relic of the past that needs to go. It is an abomination that Hillary Clinton, who won the popular vote by three million votes, yet is not the President. Every other elected official in the United States is elected by the most votes.

Why is only the Presidency determined by the Electoral College? By the way, it’s not really a college. The reason is the southern slave states. It was invented to undermine the will of the people. The slave states feared, that if they didn’t have this it would decrease their power. Since at the time slaves were counted as three fifths of a person. It gave them an enormous advantage. Trump himself has identified it as a “disaster for our democracy.”

Every state no matter gets three electoral votes. An elector from Wyoming speaks for about 60,000 Trump voters. One from California speaks for 160,000 Clinton voters. But, when the College met last week the Trump electoral votes counted for as much as Clinton’s vote.

This is twice in the last 20 years that Democrats have lost a Presidential election because of the Electoral College. Al Gore beat George Bush by 600,000 votes. If this were happening to the Republicans they would be screaming to eliminate this. In the past I have noticed that after the elections are over and everyone has settled down the lust to do anything about this slowly fades away. This time the Democrats must not let it slip away. They must stop being cowards about these things and adopt a policy right out of the Republican playbook and “obstruct, obstruct, obstruct.”

I remember when America elected an intelligent black man to be President and the whole damn country went nuts. Now the white men feel the country has gone to Hell in a handbasket. So they elected a little spoiled rich brat who promised them he would restore the country the way it used to be. They bought the con “hook, line and sinker.”

Something must be done to address the structural absurdity of our election system that allows losers to become President.
