to the editor

Dear Editor,

I am wondering how often our mayor and alderman take a drive throughout our city’s neighborhoods? I would think that the city would have ordinances against the issues that I will mention.

Some of the nicest parts of our town are really beginning to look like the neighborhoods of Cobalt Village, Junction City, North Town, and the Village Creek road area; not to mention East St. Louis. Neighborhoods that were once looked on as being clean, appealing, and respectable, are now beginning to look like a city dump! That’s right — a city dump! Some renters and owners just seem to “throw’ their junk outside the front, side, or back door. It looks very, very “tacky!” It doesn’t matter if it is junk being thrown around outside, an unkempt yard, lack of outside home maintenance, outside buildings that need repair/paint, junk cars or motorcycles actually parked in the yards, (not in driveways), nasty dog pens, or unwanted neighbor kids leaving trash on your property…it is an eyesore!

People should have more respect for their neighbors, as well as the overall appearance of the neighborhood in which they live. We all have to pay for trash pickup, so I don’t think people should be allowed to throw their “unwanted” trash outside their homes. Our aldermen and mayor need to take a drive through the city neighborhoods and start writing “citations.” Yes, I know there will be people who say, “It is my property; I pay my taxes and insurance, mind your own business. I will do with my property as I want.”

We have a “Beautification Committee,” which gives out “Yard of the Month” recognition; why not “Neighborhood of the Month?” Come on people, let’s get with it! Let’s clean up our property and our neighborhood! Look around your neighborhood…are you proud of it?

Dear Editor,

My brother is up for parole in February 2005 for a crime he committed twelve years ago when he was 20-years-old. He has been in prison for twelve years and he is very sorry for what he did! There isn’t a day that goes by that he doesn’t regret what happened! He has also done many things to reform himself during the last twelve years.

If he isn’t granted parole in February, he will not be eligible for another parole hearing for fifteen years.

We, as a family, are asking anyone who feels led to support Terry by writing a letter on his behalf asking the parole board to grant him an early release. Please write to the parole board and send a letter to the address below. The letter should state your support as to why you feel he would be a good candidate for early release. Letters should be in by the end of January. If you have any questions, please call 573-783-8060.
