Facilities improvement work moving ahead

Work to revamp the Central Elementary kitchen facility and to add a five-classroom addition at Central Middle School is progressing.

Brockmiller Construction Inc. of Farmington is handling the jobs at a total estimated cost of $1,652,999.

Both projects are being paid for with funds generated through the $4 million bond issue district voters authorized in April 2014.

Central School District Superintendent Dr. Desmond “Desi” Mayberry said Monday that the project to update the elementary school kitchen is humming along as scheduled.

It is slated to be finished by the start of the 2015-16 school year. Mayberry said the hope right now is that the project will wrap by the first week of August.

It calls for the installation of a new walk-in cooler/freezer and other kitchen equipment. New flooring and lighting are to be put in as well.

As of Monday, crews had completed all of the necessary demolition work and the new walk-in cooler/freezer had been put in place.

The new flooring was scheduled to be laid Monday. All of the remaining kitchen equipment will go in July 20.

As it is imperative that the kitchen update be completed prior to the start of the new school year, Brockmiller is devoting all of its labor to that job for the moment, Mayberry said.

He does not expect the middle school addition, which is being constructed at the southeast end of the building near the sixth grade hallway, to be finished until mid-November. Weather issues have slowed progress on the project, he said.

As of last week, all of the elevation work had been finished, all of the footings for the addition had been put in and the pad was beginning to take form.
